About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Lab Point of Care Coordinator is a lead position within the Clinical Laboratory that is responsible for the coordination of point of care testing. This support crosses multiple laboratory and clinic locations. Lab Point of Care Coordinator provides technical resources and daily direction to nurses and medical assistants with regard to laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory requirements. The Lab Point of Care Coordinator assures quality testing and accurate test performance through operator training, competency assessment, equipment monitoring, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, quality control review, and proficiency testing. Incumbents operate under general supervision. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Information Systems or Computer Science from an accredited college or university.
  • Education and training equivalent to an associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology to include:
  • Education: 60 semester hours including either 24 semester hours of Medical Laboratory Technology courses (6 hours of Chemistry; 6 hours of Biology, and 12 hours in Chemistry, Biology or Medical Laboratory Technology, or any combination).
  • Must possess a valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience performing Laboratory LIS support.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Employee Health Program requirements and background investigation.
  • Knowledge of applicable tribal, federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, including The Joint Commission Accreditation.
  • Knowledge of CDC, ADHS and the College of American Pathologists standards, rules statutes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of company policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of BLS, Infection Control, Patient Safety, Emergency Codes and Fire Safety.
  • Knowledge of test theory and instrumentation for waived testing, moderate complex testing and high complex testing.
  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and mathematics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing with staff and the public.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment compatible with the level of acquired expertise and to work effectively under stress situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Current certification as an MLT or MT with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT) is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to speak the Navajo language and/or familiarity with the Navajo Way.

Responsibilities

  • Organize work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly.
  • Maintain quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols.
  • Serve as technical resource by participating in staff training; answering questions of other professionals; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Participate with Laboratory Quality Improvement Program, Antibiotic Stewardship Program and with point of care testing.
  • Identify and communicate abnormal patient conditions by alerting supervisory personnel, the pathologist, the patient physician, or nurse, reporting mandated information to the public health department or other designated officials.
  • Contribute to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers by following established standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations.
  • Provides technical oversight for Point of Care testing performed throughout Sage Memorial Hospital to meet/exceed accreditation standards.
  • Ensures that the point of care test systems are functioning properly. Maintains, troubleshoots and takes corrective action with equipment as needed.
  • Works with nursing, medical assistants and physicians as needed to ensure Point of Care testing is running efficiently and effectively.
  • Coordinate training assessments. Develop and maintain teaching/training material. Coordinates competency assessments.
  • Write, edit and maintain point of care testing policies and procedures.
  • Provide data to assist the laboratory manager with the department budget.
  • Review quality controls for problem identification and troubleshooting.
  • Receive and review proficiency testing scores and evaluations. Facilitate re-training, re-education and re-testing for proficiency testing failures and corrective actions.
  • Maintain Point of Care inventory. Assist with purchasing functions.
  • Monitor POC middleware and software systems for errors.
  • Other POC duties as assigned
  • Serve as the primary LIS support contact for application end-users across the laboratory
  • Manage the implementation and optimization of LIS modules and interfaces with lab instruments and EMR systems
  • Facilitate business process redesign to align lab workflows with application functionality and best practices
  • Configure, maintain and troubleshoot LIS applications, ensuring uptime and date integrity
  • Participate in test planning, validation and change management for LIS software updates and instrument additions
  • Collaborate with IT and vendor teams to maintain LIS infrastructure and resolve escalated issues
  • Develop and deliver training to laboratory staff and super users; maintain training documentation
  • Support the creation and modification of test definitions, calculation and report templates within the LIS
  • Contribute to internal audits, inspections and accreditation activities involving LIS systems
  • Participate in project planning, stakeholder meetings and laboratory go-live support as required
  • Serve and protect the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and The Joint Commission.

  • Experience supporting laboratory LIS applications in a healthcare setting
  • Maintain patient confidentiality by keeping laboratory information confidential.
  • Maintain annual training and competencies by a set due date.
  • Must be able to operate, maintain, and quality control for all automatic testing equipment.
  • Ability to train and work well with others within the lab and across all departments in the organization
