Join Our Team as a Plant Safety Manager – JPW Structural Contracting, Syracuse, NY Are you passionate about creating safe, productive work environments? At JPW Structural Contracting, we’re looking for a hands-on Plant Safety Manager who’s ready to lead safety initiatives, drive compliance, and make a real impact on our people and projects. In this 50-hour work week role (with overtime paid after 40 hours), you’ll take ownership of training, inspections, audits, and the implementation of our safety programs, ensuring every team member goes home safe, every day. Your expertise will help us not only meet—but exceed—our company’s safety mission and the expectations of our valued customers.

Requirements

  • Strong leadership and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Advanced expertise in safety procedures, including HAZCOM, Confined Space, Fire Protection, PPE, Lock-Out/Tag-Out, Fall Protection, Respiratory Protection, and Protection of Openings.
  • Ability to quickly locate and reference written safety programs and procedures.
  • Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of substance abuse and intervene appropriately.
  • Current Community CPR and First Aid certification (must be maintained).
  • Experience using PPE, full-body harnesses, lanyards, scaffolds, confined space equipment, and other safety devices.
  • Certifications to operate fork truck, telescopic fork truck, boom lift, scissor lift, and man lift.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience assisting or supervising complex projects.
  • Minimum of five years’ safety experience in structural steel fabrication, machine work, or similar industries.
  • General industry background required.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook with strong business writing skills.
  • Experience delivering training and presentations in group settings, including Train-the-Trainer programs.
  • Experience working with and around overhead cranes, aerial lifts, forklifts, rigging equipment, steel fabrication, and welding.
  • Progressive safety experience in a complex, industrial business environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with employees and customers at all levels.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and other structures while maintaining balance.
  • Ability to hear orders clearly and work in environments with high noise levels.
  • Maintain acceptable visual acuity, corrected or uncorrected.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and perform all company safety-required documentation, procedures, and programs on a daily basis.
  • Further implement and continuously improve the company safety program.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal safety and health regulations.
  • Administer the safety program, including the interactive process between employee, employer, and customer.
  • Administer company safety training programs and best work practices.
  • Perform Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and implement required measures.
  • Perform and/or coordinate Industrial Hygiene (IH) exposure assessments and implement necessary controls.
  • Write and maintain safety procedures such as Lock-Out/Tag-Out, Fall Protection, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Develop and maintain safety checklists.
  • Coordinate, perform, and record weekly, monthly, and annual safety training.
  • Conduct audit reviews with supervisors to provide corrective measures and drive continuous improvement.
  • Instill a preventative safety-conscious attitude in employees and supervisors.
  • Implement and enforce the company disciplinary program for safety violations.
  • Conduct accident/incident investigations, determine root causes, and create corrective action plans.
  • Perform scheduled safety audits and inspections to identify and correct unsafe conditions and work practices.
  • Update and maintain corrective action reports, employee injury reports, and training documentation.
  • Report employee injuries and maintain injury files.
  • Purchase and maintain safety-related supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain all mandatory safety postings.
  • Prepare and conduct safety training for equipment and programs, including but not limited to Forklift, Aerial Lift, and company-specific safety topics.
  • Communicate safety progress and updates to management.
  • Retain all safety records and prepare reports as required.
  • Provide assistance and input for monthly safety meetings and daily toolbox talks.
  • Monitor and inspect equipment and safety devices for proper function.
  • Select appropriate PPE for tasks and enforce its proper usage.
  • Train personnel in safe work practices and compliance with policies.
  • Inspect work areas to ensure adherence to company and client safety policies and follow up on any non-conformance issues.
