About The Position

The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner will provide comprehensive patient care by conducting histories and physical examinations, diagnosing and treating medical conditions, prescribing medications, performing minor procedures, and responding to medical emergencies in accordance with licensure and institutional policies. Maintains accurate clinical documentation, ensures patient confidentiality and infection control compliance, and collaborates with physicians and healthcare staff to deliver high-quality medical care.

Requirements

Must be a U.S. Citizen.
National Background Check with Inquiries and Fingerprints, and Drug Screen.
Must be certified to practice medicine in the state of California.
One to three years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
Basic and Advanced Life Support certification in accordance with the American Heart Association Basic Life Support.

The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner must dress appropriately for the work environment. This includes business attire or scrubs. No khaki or green scrubs. The attire worn shall also be appropriate for the correctional environment in which the contract employee will be performing services.

Responsibilities

Provide direct patient care services in accordance with legal, ethical, and institutional standards through the evaluation of patients and therapeutic treatment as ordered by Health Services clinical staff.
Perform Advanced Practice Practitioner duties within the scope of the current licensure.
Administer medications as prescribed, i.e., by mouth, intravenously, intradermally, subcutaneously, or intramuscularly.
Assist with the distribution of medications at the pill line.
Monitor and evaluate the response to therapy.
Perform history and physicals.
Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services for the inmate.
Take medical histories, examine patients, order and interpret laboratory tests, and x-rays.
Maintain accurate logs of all reports in accordance with Bureau of Prisons and JACHO policy.
Screen laboratory tests/results for normal/abnormal lad values and notify the physician or physicians.
Ensure all sharps are secured, accounted for, stored, and disposed of according to institutional and national policy.
Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
Adhere to infection control policies and procedures.
Ability and skill to operate an EKG.
Make a diagnosis, provide treatment plans, and prescribe medications.
Clinically manage injuries by suturing, splinting, and immobilizing.
Attend to medical emergencies.
Record progress notes, recommend clinically necessary outside consultation, instruct and counsel, and order or carry out therapy.
Emergency consultation to be performed by the contractor in instances where deemed necessary.
Perform minor surgery utilizing local anesthesia during consultation visits.
Work collaboratively with the staff physician(s) and consulting physician(s) in planning, instituting, evaluating, and revising program plans.
Assist in determining conditions, resources, and policies essential to the delivery of the health care services.
Disseminates between normal and abnormal findings to recognize early stages of serious physical, emotional, or mental problems.
Manages the daily operation of the clinic and conducts daily sick call, which may include securing health histories from the patient, recording findings, and providing clinical evaluations.
Provides a wide range of emergency services in the absence of the physician
Perform duties as required, but accept only those nursing assignments that are commensurate with his/her educational preparation, training, experience, and licensure laws.
