The Phlebotomy Tech may also intervene on unacceptable specimens and is responsible for processing emergency orders within required timeframes. The position involves operating departmental computer programs for order management, troubleshooting, and reconciling outstanding test orders. It also requires practicing universal precautions, maintaining supply stock, performing equipment maintenance, and resolving issues related to specimen registration, collection, or processing. Depending on the assignment, the role may be clinic-based, involving test requisition review, patient instruction for non-blood collections, managing standing orders, and triaging specimens, or hospital-based, requiring the use of computerized WOW carts, adherence to patient isolation procedures, phone availability for emergent collections, and interaction with clinical staff for record maintenance and troubleshooting.
