This is a Full Time Day Shift position from 8a-4:30. The Phlebotomy Tech collects, labels, and transports patient specimens for testing in a timely manner, including routine and advanced venipuncture. The role upholds the organization's values, providing exemplary customer service throughout the preanalytical and analytical processes. Responsibilities include initiating intervention on unacceptable specimens, adhering to strict patient identification protocols, and collecting blood samples as ordered within prescribed timeframes. The tech processes all emergency orders (STATS and Timed Studies) promptly and labels specimens accurately according to laboratory procedures. They operate departmental computer programs for order activation, management, troubleshooting, and reconciliation of outstanding test orders. The position requires practicing universal precautions, barrier protection, and infection control. Maintaining stock of supplies, performing routine inspections, and preventive maintenance on equipment are also key duties. The Phlebotomy Tech takes prompt action to resolve issues with specimen registration, collection, or processing, and may perform specimen processing procedures or assume coordinator responsibilities in the absence of supervisory staff. They identify, understand, and document problems, escalating to supervisory staff when appropriate, and perform basic clerical duties. The role may involve assisting in training new staff or students, participating in quality improvement activities, and working with a supervisor on professional development. Attendance at educational in-services and training classes for computer systems related to patient registration and referral testing is required. Additional duties may include reviewing test requisitions, providing patient instruction for non-blood specimen collections, maintaining standing order files, scheduling lab appointments, preparing and triaging specimens, and obtaining waivers for Medicare coverage (Clinic Based). For Hospital Based roles, responsibilities include maintaining and utilizing computerized WOW carts, adhering to patient isolation procedures, maintaining phone availability for emergent collections, and interacting with clinical staff to manage computerized records and troubleshoot specimen issues.
