About The Position

The Phlebotomist will provide Phlebotomy Services to the Veterans Affairs population at various locations in Texas. This includes, but is not limited to, the collection of blood and urine samples, the preparation and tracking of all laboratory samples, the biological specimen preparation and packaging for shipment, and the maintenance of laboratory logs and other records as necessary to comply with Clinical Laboratory Inspection Amendment (CLIA) guidelines.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Completion of a certified phlebotomy program and a minimum of 12 months of documented full-time phlebotomy experience, or Medical Laboratory Technician Certification, or ASCP or ASPT Certification, a Plus but not required, and a minimum of
  • Must have at least six (6) months of applicable experience.
  • Contractor personnel shall possess basic proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Experience with specimen collection, packaging, and shipment to referral laboratories, with knowledge of maintaining appropriate records, must be shown on the resume.
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC)or the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Three (3) references (name, address, capacity, telephone), including the current or last supervisor; statement of availability.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture) and urine specimen collection on patients.
  • Ensures proper identification of patients, as determined by CTVHCS policy.
  • Uses knowledge of human anatomy, aseptic technique, and phlebotomy material selection (i.e. vacutainer, syringe, butterfly).
  • Uses judgment in selection of phlebotomy site based upon the patient's condition, age group, and type of test to be performed.
  • Prepares phlebotomy site for proper specimen collection, based upon knowledge of blood specimen types, request forms, anticoagulants, and transport conditions, testing procedures.
  • Conveys to the patient the intention of performing a phlebotomy while showing understanding and empathy for the patient's condition.
  • Performs glucose tolerance testing by administering pretest substances and drawing blood at specific time intervals.
  • Contact Medical Staff in handling patients in cases of fainting, convulsions, and illness.
  • Follows universal precautions, infection prevention and control guidelines in the performance of all procedures, wears task-appropriate PPE, disposes of needles and contaminated waste, and follows patient isolation requirements in the performance of all procedures. Follows proper procedures in the storage and disposal of needles and syringes.
  • Assists in disinfecting and closing the Phlebotomy Room at the end of the shift.

  • Unpack/pack, track, and distribute specimens to the appropriate sections.
  • Receive specimens and accompanying request forms for any of the tests that can be performed and check each for proper identification.
  • Accession orders by use of the computer system.
  • Clearly labels specimens after drawing with patient's name, identification number (SSN), phlebotomist's initials, collection time, and date as required.
  • Files results of completed laboratory tests.
  • Maintains adequate stock of supplies.
  • Rotate stock as needed to ensure supplies are used according to expiration dates.
  • providing patients with appropriate guidance, answering nontechnical inquiries, and referring technical inquiries to the appropriate laboratory staff member.
  • Assists the receptionist in accessioning patients and in providing instructions to patients for testing (i.e., clean catch urines, GTT's, 24-hour urines, etc.).
  • Some data entry may at times be required.
  • Other areas other than the assigned duty for the day may be assigned to meet workload demands.
