About The Position

This position involves identifying patients and using proper technique to obtain specimens via venous or capillary methods, verifying and labeling specimens before leaving the patient, and prioritizing and transporting specimens within stated turnaround times. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Phlebotomy certification through ASCP, AMT, NHA, ACA or NCCT required
  • No prior work experience required
  • Possess knowledge/skill of appropriate blood collection/handling techniques
  • PBT - American Society For Clinical Pathology certification

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction and guidance for questions and or problems referred by a non-certified phlebotomist concerning specimen acceptability, unusual or difficult draws or related problems
  • Performs accurate and appropriate collection and receipt of specimens in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Follows established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety, fire safety, disasters, exposure, blood borne and airborne pathogens, hazardous materials, and chain of custody procedures.
  • Assists with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees
  • When requested, performs duties required to cover in Phlebotomy Technical Specialist/Phlebotomy Coordinator’s absence
  • Other duties as assigned
