About The Position

The Philanthropy Officer advances the Honolulu Museum of Art’s mission by executing major gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies established by Advancement leadership. This role manages a disciplined portfolio of approximately 75–85 donors and prospects, contributing to annual and multi-year revenue goals. The Philanthropy Officer focuses on consistent execution, relationship development, and portfolio advancement aligned with institutional priorities and future campaign initiatives. Opened in 1927, the Honolulu Museum of Art is a home for art and education created for the benefit of the entire community. Founder Anna Rice Cooke envisioned a museum that would bring people together through the power of art and “the deep intuitions that are common to all.” The museum was conceived of as a place of meaningful exchange and dialogue, celebrating the diverse artistic and cultural traditions of Hawai‘i’s multi-ethnic population. From this founding intention grew the museum of today, with a world-class encyclopedic collection of more than 55,000 works of art, representing a stunning breadth of places and eras, from all corners of the globe and from the ancient past to the present day.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, non-profit management or related field with at least five years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A fundraising background that includes secured gifts of $25,000 or more and managing an active portfolio of 60+ prospects.
  • Strong background in organizational discipline and relationship management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in CRM systems; Tessitura preferred.
  • Honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment, enthusiasm, and follow-through.
  • Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working within a campaign environment.
  • Familiarity with planned giving vehicles and blended gift strategies.
  • CFRE certification or progress toward certification.
  • Experience in a museum, arts and culture, or nonprofit organization.jm

Responsibilities

  • Manages and advances a portfolio of 75–85 major gift donors and prospects.
  • Secures major gifts of $25,000 and above in support of institutional priorities.
  • Conducts 150+ meaningful donor visits annually.
  • Implements individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
  • Executes approved solicitation plans and prepares proposals aligned with funding priorities.
  • Adheres to moves management standards established by leadership.
  • Identifies and qualifies new major gift prospects in collaboration with Advancement department.
  • Advances donors through structured upgrade pathways.
  • Maintains portfolio health through disciplined qualification practices.
  • Surfaces planned or blended gift opportunities to leadership when appropriate.
  • Supports Trustees and volunteer leaders in cultivation and solicitation activities.
  • Prepares briefing materials and follow-up documentation.
  • Executes personalized stewardship touchpoints in coordination with Advancement colleagues.
  • Ensures timely acknowledgment, reporting, and donor follow-up.
  • Participates in prospect strategy meetings and revenue planning sessions.
  • Upholds ethical fundraising practices aligned with AFP standards and the Donor Bill of Rights.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to fostering cultivating, and preserving a culture of inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility through respectful communication and cooperation with others, continuous training, and the modeling of inclusive behaviors.
  • In partnership with HR, supports the leadership team in ensuring equitable experiences, strengthening inclusion acumen and promoting a culture of belonging that embraces the contributions of all staff.
