The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor is a member of the pharmacy leadership team and is responsible for supervising the pharmacy technician workforce. This includes oversight of the pharmacy operations in collaboration with the pharmacy management team. Understands and is proficient in the pharmacy technician functions performed by the pharmacy technicians and the pharmacy medication delivery system. The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor – Sterile Compounding is responsible for the daily supervision of pharmacy technicians involved in sterile product preparation, ensuring full compliance with all applicable regulations and standards. This role involves direct oversight of compounding activities, personnel competency, environmental monitoring, and facility maintenance related to sterile compounding cleanrooms. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of USP <797> standards, state board of pharmacy regulations, and experience with quality assurance in sterile environments.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Massachusetts Pharmacy Technician Registration in good standing.
  • Minimum of five years of hospital pharmacy technician experience, national pharmacy certification and demonstrates supervisor capability.
  • Must have a positive work ethic, motivate other team members, and promote a professional work environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a cleanroom environment performing sterile compounding.
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience with USP <797> requirements and state Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in related field with emphasis on healthcare, science or math preferred.
  • National certification as a Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) through PTCB or equivalent.
  • Previous experience overseeing environmental monitoring programs and technician training programs.

Responsibilities

  • The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor will actively monitor and, when appropriate, implement improvements with staff performance and operational workflow.
  • The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor is expected to hold staff accountable for performance and behavior and will demonstrate a standard for excellence in culture for the pharmacy team.
  • Schedule’s pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns in a minimum of 4 week increments and maintains records of weekly attendance.
  • Coordinates staffing in assigned areas to maximize efficient workflow.
  • Assigns and prioritizes routine workload for pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns in assigned areas.
  • Coordinates the orientation and training of all new pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns.
  • Develops training modules/manual that reflect current practice for technical staff to ensure compliance with acceptable standards.
  • Develops and maintains current policy and procedures for pharmacy technical staff and monitors compliance.
  • Develops and updates standards of technical practice with medication technologies to be incorporated into performance criteria for support personnel.
  • Completes performance reviews for pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns.
  • Collects and maintains workload activity records, quality control records, quality assurance records and patient charge information for monthly report.
  • Assists in conversion and implementation of new pharmacy systems and expansion of services.
  • Works with the pharmacy management team to develops and recommend budgetary needs for the areas managed.
  • Manages activities to assure financial goals are met.
  • Supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training.
  • Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions.
  • Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
  • Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems.
  • Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.
  • Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.

  • Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.
  • Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of sterile compounding pharmacy technicians.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and competency assessments for IV compounding staff.
  • Oversee onboarding, training, and ongoing education of sterile compounding personnel.
  • Ensure compounding processes meet all USP <797> standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor aseptic technique and enforce compliance with gowning and hygiene protocols.
  • Oversee cleaning procedures and adherence to environmental controls.
  • Monitor cleanroom parameters including temperature, humidity, differential pressures, and HEPA filtration.
  • Coordinate environmental testing.
  • Review environmental monitoring results and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies for sterile compounding.
  • Prepare for and participate in regulatory inspections and internal audits.
  • Maintain documentation and logs required for compliance with USP <797>, state board of pharmacy, and other applicable standards.
  • Ensure compounding records, labels, and documentation are accurate and complete.
  • Investigate deviations or errors and implement corrective/preventative actions.
