About The Position

The Pharmacist resident provides pharmaceutical care during all learning experiences and service components throughout the organization in a fashion that adheres to current state and federal regulations and laws. The Pharmacist resident demonstrates the ability to function effectively and independently as a staff pharmacist, meeting the same standards of performance, duties and functions as are required of the staff pharmacists. They are responsible for completing all goals, objectives and required competencies for individual learning experiences and the overall residency program. The pharmacist is responsible for filling and dispensing of appropriate medication orders including the proper handling, usage, and storage of drugs in the pharmacy. Will maintain standards set by the department and translates hospital policies and procedures into the daily operation of the pharmacy. Responsible for acting as an information resource to patients, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals regarding medication therapy and drug related information and literature. The person in this position works under general supervision, is responsible for various shifts including weekends. All hours must be compliant with duty hours and pharmacist resident is responsible for keeping track of such hours. The Pharmacy Resident position is designed to be a 12-month position.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree or equivalent from an ACPE - accredited college of pharmacy. ACPE-accredited Bachelor of Science in pharmacy degree programs will also be accepted
  • Enrolled with the National Matching Services’ Resident Matching Program (RMP) and adhere to the rules of the RMP process
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Candidates are required to submit the following through RMP:
  • Letter of intent - describing his/her goals and objectives for the residency program and areas of interest
  • A current curriculum vitae
  • An official transcript from his/her college of pharmacy
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Current Maryland State Pharmacist License OR License should be obtained no later than 90 days from the start date of the position
  • Minimum work experience through successful completion of required Pharmacy School curriculum rotations
  • Thorough knowledge of current theory and practice of proper pharmacy services
  • Knowledge of clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, adverse drug reactions and drug interactions and ability to interpret clinical laboratory data
  • Skill in preparing intravenous admixture solutions such as parenteral nutrition formulations and chemotherapeutic agents
  • Skill in data analysis and interpretation
  • Ability or organize and prioritize the day to day activities to be most efficient when assigned to specific patient care units
  • Skill in problem assessment and resolution
  • Ability to coordinate the work of others when tasked
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Effectively being part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Good critical thinking skills
  • Knowledge and adherent to culture of safety

Responsibilities

  • Fills prescriptions in accordance with scope of professional license and ensures proper recordation of drug use including ordering, storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals, including controlled substances
  • Prepares intravenous admixture solutions, ensuring compatibility and stability of various additives in these specially compounded solutions
  • Organizes daily operations of assigned dispensing area and closely reviews work of pharmacy interns, technicians and perform the duties as a preceptor for pharmacy students
  • Advises physicians and nurses about drug interactions, incompatibilities, side effects, instructions for drug administration, and the matters pertaining to the optimum use of medications. Resolves any issues pertaining to medication use, clarifying orders, and providing drug information between patient care areas and the Pharmacy Department
  • Performs MUE (Medical Use Evaluations). Facilities the safe, effective and economic use of drugs in a fiscally responsible manner
  • Readily accepts challenges and performs assignments utilizing critical thinking skills
  • Identifies and anticipates issues, takes responsibility for correcting it with a well-thought-out solution
  • Willingly mentors colleagues, co-workers and students
  • Reads e-mail daily on scheduled work days
  • Follows-up on the reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions and assists with the quality improvement activities in the department
  • Monitors, investigates and responds to customer feedback, modifying office systems as needed
