About The Position

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts. The Mount Rogers Health District is seeking a dedicated Public Health Nurse to join our team at the Wythe County Health Department. This position provides independent, professional nursing services across a variety of settings, including clinics, homes, schools, and other community or congregate care environments. The ideal candidate will perform comprehensive nursing assessments, conduct basic laboratory tests and measurements, develop and implement individualized care plans, administer medications, and provide case management to support the health and well‑being of our community members. This role is essential to public health efforts within the district and actively participates in community health assessments and emergency response activities. The Public Health Nurse must hold a current RN license as required by state code and may provide supervision to support staff. Requirements

  • Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
  • Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
  • Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
  • Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
  • May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
  • Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR
  • Must hold a current RN license as required by state code

Nice To Haves

  • Additional study in health promotion/or public health is preferred
  • Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
