About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Switchboard Supervisor and according to specified procedures, operates a console telephone switchboard in order to relay incoming, outgoing and interoffice calls. Performs various Hospital communications and clerical duties.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of Switchboard functions and business office machines.
  • Skilled in telephone communications.
  • Ability to work under extreme stress and work under general supervision and sometimes without any supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior PBX experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Answers and screens outside calls and relays them to the proper department or extension number; transfers and/or holds calls when necessary.
  • Answers and screens in-house calls in order to take telephone messages for Physicians and staff, requests for pages, check-outs, and outside lines, and completes calls for patients who may need assistance.
  • Pages Physicians and other personnel over the intercom system as well as encodes pocket and/or radio pagers as requested.
  • Pages Code Blue, fire alerts, STAT calls, emergency calls, Dr. Strong, etc.
  • Informs appropriate personnel of meetings, fire drills, disaster drills and other Hospital functions by announcing them over the intercom.
  • Maintain directory of hospital departments by name and extension numbers as well as telephone numbers of other local hospitals.
  • Receives disaster information, notifies proper personnel and signals all clear when appropriate.
  • Directs visitors, salesmen, Physicians, outpatients, etc. to proper locations as needed.
  • Consistently demonstrates a willingness to assist co-workers in the completion of daily tasks or special projects to support the department's efficiency.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to maintain a positive and effective working relationship with the general public and other Hospital departments.
  • Consistently provides accurate information and timely, courteous assistance to all callers.
  • Always responds to the Supervisor's request for information and assistance in a timely manner.
  • Inspires confidence from the general public, co-workers, and patients by performing and communicating in a highly professional manner at all times.
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills. Documents and reports clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrates the ability to remain friendly and cooperative under all working conditions.
