About The Position

As the payroll tax manager, you will contribute to Starbucks success by leading a team of tax professionals and having direct responsibility for maintaining compliance with tax regulations in jurisdictions across the U.S. and Canada. This includes regular business adaptation to federal, state, provincial, and local taxation updates and ensuring quarterly filings are accurate and on time. The ideal candidate is highly skilled payroll tax leader who can communicate clearly and be a thought partner to all levels of the organization.

Requirements

  • Experience with multi-entity multi-State/Provincial payroll processing for both US and Canada
  • Experience managing compliance to Federal/State/Local and Provincial labor, payroll, garnishment and tax law
  • Advanced knowledge of payroll laws and regulations as well as laws involving benefits, savings, and stock
  • Experience with expatriate administration and cross border calculations
  • Ability to prioritize for the team, balance multiple priorities, effectively manage time, meet deadlines and hold others accountable
  • Advanced skills in payroll systems (specifically SAP), Microsoft Suite (Excel, Project, PowerPoint, etc.), and other software which has an interface to SAP (ADP).
  • Ability to develop/recommend innovative solutions and process improvements based on technical payroll knowledge, analytical skills, and understanding of payroll systems.
  • Strong customer skills with consistent follow-through and ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and interact with management at all levels within an organization
  • Exceptional people leadership skills with demonstrated ability to create a high performing team in a collaborative and complex environment. Ability to manage teams comprised of technical and non-technical professionals at a variety of levels.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the payroll tax operations function – set and lead team to meet goals in compliance, risk mitigation, quality/service level.
  • Serve as point of escalation with vendor or tech issues and escalated partner (employee) concerns/issues including those with complex local regulations
  • Set vision and lead plan to continually upskill payroll team with new/updated tax laws and corresponding SOPs
  • Lead and evolve impact of payroll tax and compliance – proactively identify new, and support existing, controls; work cross functionally to support forecasting and analysis

  • If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above.
  • For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.
