Payroll Specialist

About The Position

Working in a team environment, the Payroll Specialist plans, coordinates, and performs various fiscal and accounting functions of the City of Conroe. Duties are primarily relative to payroll and general accounting; however, other areas are assigned on as needed basis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field preferred.
  • Three years of experience in a similar position in a municipal or other governmental finance department required.
  • Computer system experience required.
  • Knowledge of payroll administration, federal, and state regulations.
  • Skill in computer/data entry with attention to detail and problem resolution.
  • High level of accuracy and ability to work with time restraints.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to maintain professional relationship with departmental staff.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective communication, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to ensure timely and accurate entry of payroll data by establishing edit, audit, and review guidelines.
  • The work is sedentary and requires the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: fingering, grasping, hearing, mental acuity, repetitive motions, speaking, and talking.
  • Must pass background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening as a condition of employment.
  • A motor vehicle record check and job-related doctor's physical exam may also be required.
  • Safety-sensitive positions remain subject to random drug and alcohol testing after hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred.
  • Knowledge of payroll applications preferred.
  • Active member of American Payroll Association preferred.
  • Two years of experience with Microsoft Office products, including Word and Excel, are required.
