About The Position

Brundage Mountain Patrol is made up of a dedicated group that makes riding at Brundage a safe, fun, and exciting experience for our guests. We are a group committed to learning and using emergency care skills as we enjoy skiing, snowboarding and other recreational activities. Patrolling encompasses so much more than just rescuing or assisting the injured skier. It includes snow safety, lift evacuation, opening up new terrain, marking hazards, sharing your love of the outdoors and the mountains with our guests, and don't forget those end of day sweeps while we ride down with the last rays of alpenglow on the peaks knowing that at that moment, you might be the last person coming down that evening.

Requirements

  • EMT license, Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) certified, or Wilderness First Responder (WFR); or enrolled in EMT course or OEC candidate training program. Must successfully complete licensure or certification within 2 months as a condition of continued employment
  • Wilderness First Responder certification considered, however must enroll and successfully complete EMT licensure within 2 months of employment
  • EMT’s must become licensed in ID upon employment
  • BLS CPR for the professional rescuer
  • Must be an advanced/expert level skier/snowboarder, capable of skiing all types of terrain under all weather conditions
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather in a high alpine environment
  • Ability to reason and deal with emergency situations performing under high stress
  • Must use manual dexterity to operate equipment
  • Must be able to lift, maneuver, carry at least 50 pounds on foot and carry on ski/riding equipment
  • Must be able to ski/ride with the proficient and safe ability to run a toboggan downhill in varying snow conditions weight upwards of 250 lbs.
  • Must have sight, speech, and hearing abilities sufficient to learn skills, follow and provide directions.
  • Ability to hear & communicate over a two-way radio and with guest and/patients
  • Must possess basic computer skills/knowledge
  • Must have excellent guest service skills
  • Must work well on a team
  • Must commit to an annual schedule including weekends and holiday from Nov.-April and 3 pre-season training days beginning the second weekend of November
  • First year patrollers must also commit to an additional 3 weeks of pre-season training
  • Daily - Attend the 8:00 am morning meeting dressed out and ready to patrol. Patrol sweeps are generally off the mountain by about 5:00 pm, however longer shifts may be necessary at times. Patrollers are dismissed when all guests, patrollers, and employees are down and mountain is called clear
  • Must be at least 21 years of age upon employment
  • Must pass a criminal history and background check
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and pass an insurance driving history inquiry

Responsibilities

  • Assisting injured guests on the mountain and administering first aid
  • Transporting injured guests off the mountain using a toboggan or supporting air lift operations
  • Radio communications
  • HIPPA compliant patient care reporting using and ID EMS PCR system
  • Performing mountain opening procedures and sweeps at the end of the day to ensure that all guests are safely off the mountain
  • Avalanche mitigation and snow safety operations
  • Transporting and setting up mountain safety equipment
  • Transporting supplies and heavy equipment to areas of need, on skis or snowboard
  • Driving snowmobiles to various areas of the mountain, as needed
  • Chairlift evacuation
  • Ski terrain maintenance including identifying, marking and mitigating hazards to skiing public, lifting tower pads, boundary closures, ropes, signs, and other maintenance as needed throughout the day
  • Mountain signage – build and maintain
  • Assist with special event coverage or other projects as requested by resort management
  • Be knowledgeable about the mountain and provide exceptional guest service including de-escalation with some guests
  • Communicate with dispatcher and Hill Captain to ensure daily work projects are completed
  • Patrollers are often some of the first on the mountain and last off ensuring everyone is safely off the mountain. In the event a guest is reporting missing patrollers initiate a search and may become part of search and rescue operations
  • Promoting guest safety through education and enforcement of the Skier Responsibility Code and Resort Policies
  • Team player willing to assist and support other departments as needed
