The Patient Services Representative is responsible for complete and accurate patient registration, pre-certification, charge capture, and accurately coding diagnoses given by physicians. This role also involves posting all payments and balancing with computer reports daily. It requires a high level of public contact and excellent interpersonal skills. The representative arranges for patient pre-payments, enforces financial agreements, gathers and codes charge information, completes billing, files insurance claims, and assists patients with insurance forms. They process unpaid accounts, act as a liaison between patients and medical support staff, greet patients, verify insurance, obtain necessary signatures, and assist patients with ambulatory difficulties. Other duties include maintaining appointment books, providing front office phone support, screening visitors, processing vouchers and private payments, researching address verification, processing mail return statements, acquiring billing information, performing cashiering functions, preparing daily cash deposits, and working with patients on financial agreements. The role also involves assisting with outpatient coding and error resolution, processing edits, updating patient account databases, maintaining physician schedules, scheduling services, answering appointment questions, assembling patient charts, overseeing the waiting area, assisting with insurance claims and pre-certification, processing benefit correspondence, confirming workers’ compensation claims, preparing disability claims, maintaining files, researching billing information, keying charge information, pulling and filing charts, maintaining orderly files, purging obsolete records, making new patient charts, and repairing damaged charts. They also collect payments at time of service, review accounts for timely payments, perform collection actions, evaluate patient financial status, establish payment plans, recommend accounts for collection, identify and resolve billing complaints, participate in educational activities, gather and verify superbills, enter charge and payment information, print daily reports, back up and close computer files, register new patients, and maintain strictest confidentiality. The representative is expected to maintain a neat and professional appearance and uphold office guidelines.
