Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two years of progressive experience in a healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Laboratory management with quality analysis/control/improvement for pathology support functions.
  • Partners with Lead Pathology Office Coordinator and Pathology Services Manager in planning work schedules and assigning staff to duties based on workload/staffing needs.
  • Maintains inventory of office supplies and materials for reference lab collections/ shipping.
  • Interfaces with laboratory supervisory and management staff to promote quality customer service for all aspects of laboratory testing and specimen collection activities.
  • Performs time sensitive system distribution of slides for pathology case review by an appropriate pathologist, taking into consideration their specialty certification and current workload; Files slides upon completion of pathologist review.
  • Handles consultation requests (from patients or attending physicians) by selecting appropriate clinical case material and submitting it to the designated consultant or an appropriate consulting institution; Receives and files returned clinical material and second opinion reports.
  • Processes orders for molecular testing by selecting the appropriate clinical material and submitting it to the designated reference lab; Receives and files returned material and results.
  • Selects appropriate slides and prints corresponding reports for pathologist review and presentation of cases to tumor boards. Inova pathologists participate in more than twenty tumor boards for the purpose of timely interaction between pathologist and clinician related to tumor diagnoses and management.
  • Acts as a resource person for questions from pathologists or other pathology team members related to slide distribution, send outs, or reports.
  • Reviews voice dictation (Dragon) reports of the pathologists'’ assistants’ gross description and the pathologists’ microscopic diagnosis and edits as required to correct inaccuracies or grammatical errors prior to final sign-out by the pathologist.
  • Incorporates results from over 20 reference labs into pathology reports.
  • Incorporates results from consultations (second opinions) performed outside of Inova into pathology reports.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.
