About The Position

St. Luke’s School, a secular (non-religious), college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12 in New Canaan, Connecticut, seeks a part-time Upper School Spanish teacher to teach 2 sections, most likely Spanish II. A successful candidate will join a team that includes 6 Spanish teachers, 4 French teachers, and 3 Mandarin teachers. The WL program is known regionally and nationally for its innovations, use of cutting-edge technology, and total immersion modern language classes. Since 2015, the St. Luke’s French program is the only school in the USA to have been consistently awarded the status of “AATF Exemplary French Program with Distinction”: the highest rank of French programs nationally.

This position is suited to a teacher seeking the flexibility of a part-time schedule. St. Luke’s Upper School schedule is a rotating 6-day cycle; classes meet 4 times per cycle for 1 hour each. In addition, part-time teachers can expect to provide about 2 hours of extra help to students each week, on average. Preparation for classes and grading student work may all be completed at home; part-time employees only have to be on campus to teach their classes and occasionally attend faculty meetings. New employees attend a week-long orientation in August, prior to the start of school.

Requirements

• Fluency in Spanish
• Flexible: able to teach at different times each day of the 6 day cycle
• Prior experience teaching Spanish at the middle school, high school, or college level
• Desire and ability to build authentic relationships with students
• Ability to teach rich content with creative pedagogy
• Superb oral and written communication skills
• Flexibility and strong organizational skills
• Excellent time management
• Capacity to develop students’ critical thinking and analytical skills
• Strong cultural competency skills, with demonstrated commitment to furthering an equitable and inclusive school community

Responsibilities

• Teach part-time course load of two Upper School sections, most likely Spanish II.
• Attend monthly Department meetings and occasional other required meetings in person or via Zoom.
• Make arrangements to provide extra help for students as needed.
