About The Position

The Parks Superintendent oversees the daily operations of the Parks maintenance division, ensuring high standards of maintenance, safety, and cleanliness across all parks and athletic facilities. This role is instrumental in shaping the department's mission, fostering stakeholder relationships, and managing financial resources with a focus on innovation, collaboration, and community engagement.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience is required.
  • Valid driver's license (Class C) is required at the time of placement.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for events or emergencies.
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector certificate through the National Recreation and Park Association is required, or the ability to obtain one within one year of employment.
  • Pesticide Applicator license is required within one year of employment.
  • Knowledge of landscape design, horticulture, and park maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of budget management and financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of relevant local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Skill in leadership, organization, and both verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written and electronic reports.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with all city departments and community partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Science, or a related field is preferred.
  • A background in park management is preferred.
  • CDL license is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the planning, development, maintenance, and improvement of city parks and landscaped areas.
  • Directly manage and coordinate the daily activities of the park maintenance staff, ensuring efficient and effective operations.
  • Carry out supervisory and management responsibilities in accordance with the City of Lufkin's policies and applicable laws.
  • Manage the department's budget, monitor expenses, and make recommendations for resource allocation.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for mowing, maintenance, and enhancement of all parks, athletic facilities, and city-owned landscaped areas.
  • Interview potential parks maintenance candidates; training, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
  • Monitor and enforce safety protocols to ensure a secure environment for park staff and visitors.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all park equipment to identify maintenance needs and address them promptly.
  • Coordinate with city departments and partners for events held within parks and other city properties.
  • Monitor industry trends, best practices, and innovative approaches to park management.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Provide services during emergency situations.
