About The Position

San Rafael State Park is situated in a remote location with limited access to nearby services, amenities, and support personnel. The Park Ranger-Senior must be comfortable working in an isolated environment, sometimes for extended periods, and although under the direction of the Patagonia Lake State Park Assistant Manager, they must demonstrate the ability to self-direct their daily workflow without direct oversight. This role requires strong personal initiative, the ability to recognize what needs to be done and take action without waiting to be told. They must be adaptable, resourceful, and comfortable making sound independent judgments when supervisory guidance is not immediately available.

Requirements

  • General building maintenance principles including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and roofing
  • Grounds maintenance practices including irrigation systems, tree care, brush clearing, and weed control
  • Park rules, regulations, and resource protection principles
  • Safe use and operation of hand and power tools and equipment
  • Basic pesticide and herbicide application practices
  • State park fee collection and visitor services procedures (applicable to Patagonia Lake assignment)
  • Operating light and heavy equipment including tractor, dump truck, generators, pumps, lawn mower, and power tools
  • Performing preventative maintenance and equipment inspection
  • Performing janitorial and facility cleaning to maintain safe and orderly conditions
  • Lead volunteers and provide work direction
  • Communicating effectively with volunteers, community members, and agency partners
  • Applying park rules and regulations in visitor contact situations
  • work independently in a remote, isolated environment with minimal supervision
  • Ability to self-monitor workload, prioritize tasks, and exercise personal initiative without direct oversight
  • Ability to identify and respond to maintenance, safety, and operational needs proactively
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with community members, partner groups, and the Friends organization
  • Ability to perform sustained physical labor including lifting, bending, squatting, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to adapt to varying assignments across multiple park locations
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Trade certification or coursework in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or general building maintenance
  • Must have a valid Arizona driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of experience equivalent to a Park Ranger Specialist; OR a Bachelor's degree in Park Management, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field. Any combination of training and experience that meets the knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans Ranch House and outbuildings; performs janitorial and housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, safe, and orderly facility.
  • Maintains park grounds; fertilizes and irrigates trees, repairs irrigation systems, prunes trees, clears brush, controls weeds, maintains fire lines, roads, and parking lots.
  • Maintains park buildings and infrastructure including plumbing, electrical, painting, and roofing; inspects and services park equipment; replaces worn parts and performs preventative maintenance on tractors, generators, pumps, and power tools.
  • Involved in park construction and special projects including carpentry, electrical, and plumbing; operates equipment including tractor, dump truck, generators, pumps, weed eater, lawn mower, and power tools.
  • Assist and lead volunteers and maintains positive working relationships with the local valley community and the park's Friends group.
  • = Performs standard Park Ranger duties two days per week at Patagonia Lake State Park including patrol, visitor contact, rule compliance, resource maintenance, and fee collection.
