About The Position

Hennepin Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), a division of Hennepin County Medical Center, is seeking Paramedics to start on July 6th, 2026. This posting serves as a Talent Pipeline for interested candidates. A $5,000 hiring incentive is available for eligible external candidates. Hennepin EMS is an Urban/Suburban 9-1-1 Emergency Medical Services agency based at Hennepin County Medical Center in Downtown Minneapolis. It handles approximately 75,000 calls for service annually from citizens and visitors of Hennepin County, Minnesota, serving 14 municipalities within the county, covering 266 square miles and a population of over 700,000. HEMS deploys ambulances using an integrated Computer Aided Dispatch system with Automatic Vehicle Location and Global Positioning Satellites to ensure the closest available ambulance responds to emergencies. The agency's goal is to deliver quality service with a courteous and immediate response, upholding the highest standard for excellence in public safety. The Paramedic position involves responding to requests for emergency medical services and providing Basic and Advanced Life Support to sick and injured persons at emergency scenes and during transport to a health care facility. The schedule includes day/eve/night shifts, rotating weekends, and holidays based on department needs. This position is benefit-eligible, including PERA and P&F Pension, and is represented by the HCAPE union. Paramedics will receive credit for previous Paramedic experience when calculating their starting hourly pay rate, with a maximum of 10 years of experience recognized.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an approved training program for EMT-Paramedic
  • Certification by the State of Minnesota or National Registry of EMT's as an EMT-Paramedic
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or state equivalent and must have a satisfactory driving record including no more than two moving violations in the past three years of licensure

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of experience as an emergency medical technician in a hospital emergency department
  • Six (6) months of experience as an emergency medical technician with a licensed ambulance service
  • Successful completion of paramedic clinical rotations with Hennepin EMS accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the school’s Program Director
  • Minimum of three years full-time experience as a provider of pre-hospital care in an emergency setting (paramedic level preferred)
  • Paramedic experience in a two tiered ALS system, using System Status Management (SSM) or flexible-dynamic deployment models
  • Full-time experience must be within one year of date of application
  • Associate Degree (AA, AAS, or AS) in business, business administration, management, education, finance, economics, healthcare, health sciences, public health, communication, computer science, information technology, or related field

Responsibilities

  • Respond to all requests for emergency medical services as directed
  • Respond to events such as multiple alarm fires, helicopter landings, hazardous incidents, FAA emergencies, and water emergencies
  • Assess nature and extent of illness or injury and determine appropriate emergency medical procedures
  • Administer basic life support techniques using accepted standards of patient care
  • Administer advanced life support techniques under the written patient care protocol or in direct radio contact with a physician
  • Perform extrication and rescue of victims
  • Acts as a team leader when dealing with emergency responses including the direction of First Responders to facilitate patient care and transport
  • Function effectively in assigned role under the Incident Response Plan
  • Complete thorough documentation of all emergency runs and patient contacts as directed
  • Operate emergency vehicle to transport sick and injured persons to and from a health care facility
  • Operate emergency medical equipment and communications equipment
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain emergency vehicle, supplies, and assigned equipment
  • Assist in keeping ambulance facilities clean and orderly
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports according to department standards
  • Attends all mandatory continuing education and required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards
  • Follows the hospital and department exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment with an emphasis on customer service
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives
  • Performs other duties as assigned after appropriate training
