About The Position

We're hiring a Paralegal 2 to join DSHS's Board of Appeals, part of its Office of Public Integrity within the Office of the Secretary (OOS). This position requires two days in the office in Olympia each week, initially Mondays and Thursdays, and availability to come to the office on other days. Telework is available for the days that are not required to be in-office. The in-office requirement is not likely to change, but some adjustments in the schedule may be negotiated after the initial six-month probationary period. You will perform legal and technical work for the Board of Appeals and support the work of Review Judges and the Chief Review Judge for the Board of Appeals. You'll help ensure that the Review Judges' rulings are timely and correctly issued in accordance with state and federal law.

Requirements

  • Combination of four years of experience through paralegal certification, two-year paralegal degree, or paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney.

  • One year experience as a Paralegal 1.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, review, and assign petitions for review filed with DSHS
  • Compile and process the official record of all cases related to DSHS matters heard by the Office of Administrative Hearings
  • When a request for review has been received by BOA, compile the record, including the recording of the hearing, a transcript in some cases, the exhibits, and other documents for the review judges to review
  • Compile for superior courts in Washington the official record of all cases related to DSHS matters for which a party seeks judicial review
  • Provide meticulous attention to detail such as client numbers, docket numbers, party names, relief being sought, proofreading Review Judge's decisions, and a myriad of other details
  • Demonstrate the highest professional concern with accuracy, reliability, dependability, attendance, and with doing the best job possible
  • Review legal documents and notices to initially determine if the Board has jurisdiction
  • Perform legal research, identify, and check appropriate citations for cases under administrative review
  • Use databases to document, manage, and track requests, hearing transcripts, and evidence to be considered by the Review Judges
  • Prepare and distribute legal notices and correspondence for the Board of Appeals
  • Respond to complex questions from the public, attorneys, Administrative Law Judges, Review Judges, legislators, and others
  • Manage Board of Appeals public records, data sets, database entry, and data tracking
