About The Position

The Department of Campus Recreation at Penn State is seeking an OLTC Expedition Leader. This role involves leading extended outdoor trips such as hiking, backpacking, caving, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, and whitewater rafting. Key responsibilities include driving University vehicles and trailers, teaching technical skills, fostering positive group dynamics, managing risks, overseeing meal preparation, and effective communication with co-leaders. The position also requires extensive planning and preparation for trips, including itinerary development, menu planning, equipment management, participant communication, and completing all necessary paperwork. Post-trip duties involve equipment cleanup, report submission, and peer feedback. Campus Recreation, a department within Student Affairs, provides a wide range of fitness, wellness, and recreational programs across various facilities including the Intramural Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed the 10-day Outdoor Leadership Training Course (OLTC)
  • Maintain a valid Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR (or higher) certification
  • Have documented outdoor/adventure leadership experience in the form of an experience log
  • Possess the skills, knowledge, and experience to lead trips in at least 1 activity
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Successfully complete a motor vehicle records check
  • Successfully complete background check(s)

Responsibilities

  • Complete post-trip tasks including proper cleanup and return of all equipment
  • Complete post-trip reports
  • Give and receive peer feedback
