About The Position

Established in 1963, Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a non-profit corporation guided by a student board and managed by full-time professional staff. ASI is a part of the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with a dashed reporting line to Administrative Affairs. ASI serves the entire campus population, including over 26,000 students, by providing opportunities for student engagement, student employment, and a multitude of programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. ASI operational support areas include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing. Since 2014, Associated Students Inc., Adventures has been providing unique recreational opportunities to over 12,000 Cal Poly Pomona students annually. Everyday students and staff within this community challenge themselves to embrace new opportunities and partake in life-changing experiences that bring full value to their college experience.  Hosting both technical and experiential programing, Adventures focuses on creating competent recreators within both indoor and outdoor disciplines. Through our wilderness outings, Bronco Peak rock wall, Gear Rental Center, instructional workshops, and certification courses, Adventures provides an opportunity for students to build a strong community that embraces inclusivity, learning and the development of lifelong hobbies and friends. POSITION DEFINITION Under general supervision from the Adventure Education Manager, the Adventures Attendant is responsible for monitoring the climbing wall, delivering climbing wall orientation and belay classes, promoting workshops, and assisting with Adventures special events.

Requirements

  • Current American Red Cross First Aid, Emergency Oxygen, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications (Employment offer contingent on obtaining certification within 30 days of hire, training provided by ASI)
  • Successfully complete the top rope assessment within 30 days of hire, training provided by ASI
  • Demonstrated leadership skills when working with peers
  • Ability to exhibit a personable, helpful, and positive attitude when interacting with BRIC members and guests
  • Reliable; ability to work under general supervision and occasionally make independent decisions
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain professional work conduct
  • Ability to adhere to work rules, follow directions, use time effectively and work productively under general supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population and campus community
  • Ability to successfully pass a background screening as an offer of employment is contingent on background clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Climbing (indoor or out) and/or outdoor recreation experience, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Monitor climbing wall and related activities
  • Provide customer service and manage member risk
  • Enforce Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC) and Climbing Wall policies
  • Respond to emergencies and injuries and provide care as required until  emergency medical services arrive
  • Assist with climbing wall workshops, and route setting
  • Conduct belay assessments
  • Provide Climbing Wall orientation and belays to new members
  • Inform members of Adventure programs and services
  • Perform routine inspections of equipment, document and report equipment malfunction or facility hazards
  • Attend meetings and trainings as required
  • Availability must include at least 2 shifts a week and Saturdays
  • Supports summer orientations, tabling, and facility tours as scheduled
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
