About The Position

Established in 1963, Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a non-profit corporation guided by a student board and managed by full-time professional staff. ASI is a part of the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with a dashed reporting line to Administrative Affairs. ASI serves the entire campus population, including over 26,000 students, by providing opportunities for student engagement, student employment, and a multitude of programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. ASI operational support areas include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing. Through our wilderness outings, Bronco Peak rock wall, Gear Rental Center, instructional workshops, and certification courses, Adventures provides an opportunity for students to build a strong community that embraces inclusivity, learning and the development of lifelong hobbies and friends. POSITION DEFINITION Under the general supervision of the Adventure Education Manager, the Adventures Trip Lead Assistant is responsible for promoting the adventures program at the Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC) and assisting Adventures Trip Leads run outdoor programs in front country, back country, day, and overnight trips. The Adventures Trip Lead Assistant assists Adventures Trip Leads in safe, effective, and engaging instruction utilizing established best practices in outdoor group settings.

Requirements

  • Current American Red Cross CPR for Professional Rescuers certification and Administering Emergency Oxygen certification within 30 days of hire (or equivalent) (training provided by ASI)
  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic student population and campus community.
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a background check (including a criminal records check)
  • Minimum of 1 year teaching/instructing experience
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in respective recreation discipline
  • Up to date Trip and Experience Log demonstrating adequate experience in the outdoors including leading others, formally or informally
  • Working toward a national certification in outdoor recreation such as but not limited to: (employment offer contingent on obtaining certification within 12 months of hire)
  • California Food Handlers License within 30 days of hire
  • May be required to drive passenger vehicles up to 10 passengers or a box truck up to 16’ in length
  • If required to drive, Current California Class C Driver’s License and unofficial driving record will be required
  • Ability to self-reflect, receive constructive criticism, and pursue growth and development

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and delivery of adventures outdoor programs appropriate for varying levels of technical ability
  • Arrive on time to scheduled pre-trip obligations and trips; ensure that programs begin and end on time
  • Assist in the completion of the pre-course task list including but not limited to trip itinerary, equipment inspection, and weather assessment
  • Assist in the completion of post-course task list including but not limited to participant evaluation, instructor evaluation, trip end report and equipment return
  • Assist in cleaning and organizing equipment after each trip
  • Complete all forms associated with specific trip
  • May assist in-house trainings related to outdoor front and backcountry trip facilitation
  • Enforce outdoor program policies and procedures
  • Assist in the maintenance and administrative duties associated with the Campus Recreation equipment rental program
  • Maintain current knowledge of ASI and Campus Recreation programs and services
  • Attend trainings, meetings and workshops as required
  • Maintain open communication with the Adventure Education Coordinator
  • Respond to emergencies and injuries and provide care as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Perform other duties as assigned
