About The Position

The student orientation leader position is designed to partner with the Office of Advising, Transitions, and Student Success (OATSS) to onboard new Oakton students during the summer Advising & Registration Workshop (ARW). During ARW, orientation leaders will assist with creating a welcoming environment, conduct campus tours, and assist students with the registration process. Orientation leaders will also help students navigate various onboarding steps and processes to aid in their success. Orientation Leaders are expected to represent Oakton well as dynamic role models while serving as a valuable resource to new students during their transition to the institution. Campus Location: Des Plaines Length of Employment: Orientation Leaders must commit to training and work a majority of the day long Advising & Registration Workshops scheduled between May 2026- August 2026. Orientation Leaders may be scheduled additional hours each week for training or administrative projects related to workshops or team development. There may be an opportunity to renew beyond August 2026 and retain employment during fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in at least one summer credit course or be enrolled in at least six credit hours in the subsequent fall semester to work during the summer semester.
  • Must have an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher and be in good standing at Oakton College.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a role model to Oakton students and as a positive representative of the Office of Advising, Transitions, and Student Success to all students, families, and college staff/faculty.
  • Assist incoming students through their personal and academic transition to Oakton.
  • Provide support for the academic advising process by assisting in the course registration lab, answering questions related to course requirements, electives, and scheduling.
  • Familiarize students with campus resources and common transitional issues.
  • Convey information to new students about college programs and services.
  • Create a welcoming and positive atmosphere for students of various backgrounds and abilities.
  • Attend and participate in all training sessions and Advising & Registration Workshops.
