About The Position

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is seeking a well-organized, detail-oriented individual to join the cultural resources team within the Division of Recreation and Parks. This position will focus on the digitization, organization, and archiving of historic documents and objects. As part of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Park Service manages 175 state parks and trails statewide, with a mission to: "provide resource-based recreation while preserving, interpreting, and restoring natural and cultural resources." This position supports the Florida Park Service’s central collection of historic documents and objects. The OPS Government Operations Consultant I (Collections & Archives Technician) position is located within the Bureau of Natural and Cultural Resources (BNCR) in Tallahassee, Florida. This is a part-time OPS position (up to 29 hours a week. Workdays and hours are flexible, but work must be accomplished between Monday and Friday during regular work hours).

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Museum collections management and archive operations
  • Knowledge of: PastPerfect collections management software
  • Knowledge of: Digital photography
  • Skills in: Windows Office Suite especially Office 365 applications (primarily, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook), Adobe acrobat, Internet and online databases
  • Ability to: Safely handle fragile or sensitive historical materials
  • Ability to: Lift and move objects up to 30 pounds with or without accommodation
  • Ability to: Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to: Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to: Work well independently or as part of a team
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of college coursework in Museum Studies, History, Library Science, Archival Studies, Anthropology, or a related field.
  • At least one year of experience working with museum collections, archives, or historical documents (academic, volunteer, or professional experience acceptable).
  • Experience with digitization processes and managing digital files.
  • Familiarity with collections management systems, preferably PastPerfect 5.0

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the digitization of an extensive collection of historic objects, photographs, blueprints, and architectural drawings.
  • Creating digital files using a large-format feeder scanner.
  • Entering image and data files into the collections management software (PastPerfect).
  • Rehousing objects and documents using archival-quality materials.
  • Updating finding aids and catalog plans housed in flat file cabinets.
  • Conducting general inventory and organization of the central collections.
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly work area, including light cleaning as needed.
