About The Position

This is a part-time OPS Family Support Worker position with the Department of Health, working approximately 25-29 hours per week. The primary responsibility is to counsel women in WIC clinics, manage a caseload of WIC clients, and provide essential breastfeeding information and support to new mothers. This includes educating them on the benefits of breastfeeding, helping overcome common barriers, and assisting with common breastfeeding concerns. The role also requires availability outside usual working hours for mothers experiencing breastfeeding problems, maintaining client confidentiality, accurate record-keeping, and working in outlying clinics as assigned. The Family Support Worker will also refer mothers to appropriate health and social services, attend and assist with breastfeeding classes and support groups, and participate in staff meetings and professional development activities.

Requirements

  • Work approximately 25-29 hours per week.

  • Knowledge of States of Florida Personnel Rules and applicable Florida Statues
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to prepare accurate reports timely.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.
  • Must have current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
  • Must be willing to physically come in the office daily and perform field work.
  • Must have exclusively breastfed a baby for at least 6 months.
  • Must be willing to travel within Clay County.
  • Must not have one or more of the following credentials: Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Dietitian (RD), Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (LD/N), or International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
  • Willing to be on-call at night or weekends (up to 9pm at night and weekends 9am to 9pm).
  • Able to lift and carry a minimum of 25lbs over uneven ground unassisted.
  • Valid state driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Time sheet and EAR entry within the required time frame
  • Subject to emergency duty in the event of a natural disaster
  • Completion of all mandatory or assigned trainings within the required time frame.
  • Counsel women in the WIC clinic.
  • Receive a caseload of WIC clients and make routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned.
  • Give basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. She also helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
  • Available outside usual 8 to 5 working hours to new mothers who are having breastfeeding problems.
  • Respect each client by keeping her information strictly confidential.
  • Keep accurate records of all contacts made with WIC clients.
  • Work in outlying clinics as assigned.
  • Refer mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to the: WIC nutritionist or breastfeeding coordinator, lactation consultant, the mother’s physician or nurse, public health programs in the community, or social service agencies.
  • Attend and assist with breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding support group as assigned.
  • Attend & participates in monthly staff meetings, in-service trainings, other staff development activities and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
  • Accurately complete all forms such as leave & attendance records, etc by required deadlines 90% of the time.
  • Read assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the supervisor.
  • Assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.
  • Other duties assigned by the supervisor.
