About The Position
The Skid Steer Operator – Final Grade is an experienced, safety-focused professional responsible for operating a skid steer to perform fine grading, material placement, and surface preparation to precise specifications. This position plays a critical role in ensuring proper base preparation and final grading prior to paving operations, directly impacting the overall quality and longevity of the finished product. This is a key position on the job site requiring strong attention to detail, grade awareness, and the ability to work efficiently in coordination with the paving and sitework crews. The Operator must demonstrate precision in achieving proper elevations, slopes, drainage patterns, and compaction requirements while maintaining productivity and job-site safety. The Skid Steer Operator must be able to take direction from the Crew Foreman while also communicating effectively with laborers, roller operators, and paving crew members to ensure smooth workflow and high-quality results. The ability to read grade stakes, understand site plans, and make fine adjustments to achieve final grade tolerances is essential.
Requirements
- The ideal candidate will have proven experience operating a skid steer in grading and site preparation applications, with demonstrated ability to perform fine grading and achieve precise elevations and slope tolerances.
- A strong understanding of base preparation, drainage patterns, compaction requirements, and surface readiness prior to paving is essential.
- The candidate must be comfortable working from grade stakes, string lines, lasers, or site plans to ensure accuracy and quality workmanship.
- This role requires the ability to take direction from the Crew Foreman while working collaboratively with sitework and paving crews to maintain productivity, safety, and quality standards.
- The successful candidate must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and remain compliant with the Company’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy, including random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion testing as applicable.
Responsibilities
- Operate skid steer according to job specifications for grading, final grade, and material placement
- Perform fine grading to achieve proper elevations, slopes, and drainage prior to paving
- Work closely with the Foreman to ensure grade accuracy and job progression
- Coordinate with laborers and roller operators to ensure base preparation meets quality standards
- Identify and correct grade inconsistencies, low spots, high spots, or drainage issues
- Maintain clean transitions, tie-ins, and edge preparation for paving operations
- Follow all safety procedures and ensure safe operation of equipment at all times
- Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns
- Assist with job site setup, breakdown, and general sitework operations as needed
- Support productivity goals while maintaining high-quality standards
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Crew Foreman or Superintendent
