About The Position

This full-time Nursing Assistant position at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center, specifically within the Surgical Access unit, involves direct patient care from 6 AM to 7 PM. The role encompasses assisting patients with daily living activities, hygiene, mobility, toileting, and emotional support. Key responsibilities include administering basic treatments, monitoring patient conditions, reporting changes to the primary nurse, and ensuring patient safety and comfort. The Nursing Assistant is also responsible for adhering to safety standards, maintaining equipment, and managing materials. Responsibilities

  • Assists with ADLs, hygiene, mobility, toileting, and emotional support.
  • Administers basic treatments (e.g. dressing changes, telemetry, specimen collection).
  • Supports nursing personnel in providing direct patient care.
  • Assists patients with daily activities.
  • Measures and records weights.
  • Measures and records vital signs, I&Os, and monitors patient condition.
  • Performs blood glucose monitoring.
  • Knowledgeable of the normal values and ranges for vital signs and I&O’s, recognizes abnormal findings and reports to the primary nurse.
  • Participates in daily Huddle.
  • Documents timely in the patients’ medical record.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in responding to patient needs while completing assignments.
  • Completes all assignments unless otherwise directed by charge nurse.
  • Works as a team member in meeting the unit needs.
  • Seeks approval for reprioritization of more complex events deviating from original assignment.
  • Performs activities as needed without supervision.
  • Answers call lights promptly and courteously and provides interventions as appropriate.
  • Ensures call bell and telephone are within reach of patient prior to leaving patient room.
  • Cleans, stocks and sets up rooms for arriving patients.
  • Checks for appropriate patient IDs including falls and allergy.
  • Ensures patient rooms are neat and clean.
  • Recognizes need for and responds to all bed and chair alarms in an expeditious manner.
  • Works as Patient Safety Technician as needed.
  • Rounds with purpose using appropriate scripting.
  • Gives report to oncoming shift.
  • Observes and responds to emotional needs of patient and/or significant other.
  • Reports observations to RN for follow up.
  • Seeks information regarding teaching goals for individual patients.
  • Observes RN instructions to patients and provides consistent reinforcement as needed.
  • Maintains log of all equipment sent to Clinical Engineering for repair.
  • Reports all lost or equipment unable to be repaired to charge nurse.
  • Returns rental equipment in a timely manner with patient identification.
  • Keeps equipment cleaned and charged.
  • Notifies unit associate of equipment needing repair and attaches appropriate repair tag.
  • Orients new staff in care of equipment.
  • Adheres to OSHA, Joint Commission, Board of Health, ASPAN and hospital standards.
  • Observes and maintains isolation precautions.
  • Follows hand washing protocol.
  • Maintains a clean and clutter free work environment.
  • Uses and stores equipment properly.
  • Wears and uses communication devices (Vocera) according to policy.
  • Must work in a fast-paced environment with positive customer service skills.
  • Communicates supply needs to appropriate personnel in a timely fashion, following up on resolution of deficiency.
  • Assists in the distribution of supplies to the designated location.
  • Restocks designated patient care areas on a regular basis, rotating stock and checking expiration dates routinely.
  • Confirms patient using two identifiers per AH policy.
  • Escorts incoming patients from the Surgical family Waiting area to assigned bay in Pre-Op holding.
  • Assists patients in walking to prevent falls/accidents.
  • Transports non-ambulatory patients using wheelchair/stretcher/bed to designated areas within the facility during patient stay in SAU.
  • Transports inpatient surgical patients to the SAU via stretcher/bed when dispatched by charge nurse.
