The Hospitalist Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care to hospitalized patients, working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to manage acute and chronic conditions. The NP performs comprehensive assessments, develops and implements treatment plans, orders and interprets diagnostic tests, and coordinates patient care to ensure optimal outcomes during hospital stays.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • If APRN was licensed prior to August 1, 1995, master's degree in nursing is preferred.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice.
  • State Controlled Substance License (if required by State)
  • National board certification as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC) or (ACNPC-AG), Acute Care Adult (ACNP-BC); Additional certifications require approval from a market executive leader: Family (FNP-BC) or (FNP–C), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP-BC) or (A-GNP)
  • Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.
  • Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede this job description in defining minimum qualifications, criteria, and scope of practice, if variation between documents exists.

  • Previous experience in hospital medicine, acute care, or related clinical settings preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including history, physical exams, and review of diagnostic results.
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions in hospitalized patients.
  • Develop, implement, and modify individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Order, interpret, and follow up on laboratory tests, imaging studies, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Prescribe medications and treatments according to hospital protocols and state regulations.
  • Monitor patient progress and adjust care plans as necessary.
  • Facilitate patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment, and discharge plans.
  • Coordinate patient care with consulting specialists, nursing staff, social workers, and other healthcare providers.
  • Document all patient encounters and care plans accurately and timely in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Participate in hospital rounds, quality improvement initiatives, and staff education.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Respond to emergent patient needs and assist in critical care situations as needed.
  • This position also provides on-call coverage outside of regularly scheduled hours.
