This position is the employment part of the Earn to Learn grant program Nurse Externs observe, document and communicate needs, concerns, and patient status changes to health care team promptly in various roles and departments throughout the organization. Provide emotional support, education and guidance to patients during their hospital stay. Under the direction of the registered nurse or healthcare team member assists with nursing practice interventions. Provides quality service through a team oriented, collaborative approach to patient care. Acts as a role model for excellence in customer service. Promotes positive patient outcomes through inquiry and evidence-based practice. Performs significant job responsibilities:Provide basic patient care including activities of daily living Range of motion.AmbulationPositioning and skin care.Appropriate bathing and oral hygiene.Feeding and meal delivery.Toileting and incontinent care.Ensures a clean and safe working and patient environmentAids patient care team in collection of patient data and specimens. Reporting irregularities to the primary nurse. May participate in Interdisciplinary rounds (IDR)Patient rounding focusing on the 4P’s. Personal needs, Pain, Positioning, and Personal ItemsEnsures timely communication with the Central Operations Center and ensures timely interventions regarding identified events/concerns related to telemetry, bed alarms and/or virtual sitting Obtains urine, stool, and sputum specimens and processes specimens Obtains and records heath, weights, vital signs, including pulse oximetry and pain level and I&OCommunicates patient status and reports changes in patient condition to licensed professional.Aids patient care team by performing and explaining designated patient care procedures:Performs and educates patient regarding purpose of incentive spirometry.Transport patients. Preps patient for diagnostic testsPerforms pulse oximetryProvides postmortem careAssists with admissions and dischargesAssists nurse in emergency situations.Performs ostomy care.Performs suction (oral).Performs blood sugar finger sticks.Performs EKGs (department specific responsibility).Provides patient education under direction of the RNAssists with proning of patient and bedside procedure under the direction of the RNAdditional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:May preform communication liaison duties for daily patient communications with family. Answers telephone promptly using excellent Customer Service skills.Answers patient call light Maintains and cleans equipmentCommunicates patient and family requests to appropriate personnel immediately after receipt of request.Responds and carries out patient and family requests when appropriate.Coordinates equipment/supply needs in collaboration with supply management personnel Notifies appropriate department of equipment malfunction -tags equipment according to hospital procedureUse early mobility techniques to minimize complications of immobility and improve patient outcomes related to nursing sensitive indicators Participates in the sitter process (if competencies appropriate)Participates in the orientation of peers and completes the required paperwork.Assists with learning needs on unit and coordinates as instructed by leader.Provides timely and ongoing feedback to peersPerforms any other related duties (e.g., technical duties) as assigned.Develops advanced competencies as found appropriate by Manager/Director.
