This Job Posting Supports all Locations for Nurse Extern III Interest with Summer 2026 Start. Summary Assists in the delivery of nursing care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Gains knowledge and skills related to the role of a professional nurse, while contributing to the patient care delivered on assigned unit. Administers medications with the Registered Nurse and assumes responsibility for increased patient assignment (volume and complexity) under the direction of an RN.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED and completion of junior year or equivalent if enrolled in a diploma, ADN, or fast track program.
  • Must present proof of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania
  • Lift and carry 40-50 lbs.
  • Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight.
  • Frequent to continuous standing/walking.
  • Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift.
  • Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with nurse preceptor, demonstrates commitment to quality and safety, in accordance with established policies and procedures, utilizing evidence-based practice.
  • Participates in evidence-based practice and research projects as applicable.
  • Under direction of registered nurse coordinates and provides patient and family education throughout treatment course to facilitate an effective transition of care.
  • Assists in preparation of units, patient rooms, and beds for receiving patient admissions, returning surgical patients, transfers, emergencies, or discharges.
  • Assists registered nurse in development and revision of nursing care plans, complicated treatment procedures, and patient/family education.
  • Attends mandatory educations programs, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills, etc.
  • Under direct supervision of the registered nurse administers medications to assigned patients and provides medication education.
  • Demonstrates competencies to provide care to specific patient populations (neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric) as defined by level of care required, technology utilized, and department scope of care.
  • Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other hospital personnel, while assuring confidentiality of patient information.
  • Assumes responsibility for increased patient assignment (volume and complexity) under the direction of a RN.
