About The Position

This 8-week program offers the Nurse Extern an exceptional opportunity to gain invaluable hands-on-experience and to develop essential clinical skills in a fast-paced hospital setting to better prepare them for their career as a Registered Nurse. In the Nurse Extern role, you will work a total of three 12-hour shifts per week (two 12-hour shifts as a nursing tech in our float pool and one 12-hour shift shadowing a RN) Under the supervision and/or direction of a Registered Nurse, the Nursing Extern performs various duties assisting the staff in the treatment and care of patients in accordance with the established methods and procedures of the hospital.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in nursing school and will graduate within 12 months of program start date (June 18, 2026)
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Currently enrolled in nursing school and will graduate within 12 months of program start date
  • BLS – Basic Life Saving Certification through American Heart Association

Responsibilities

  • Patient Care Assistance: Provide direct patient care under the supervision of registered nurses. Assist with activities of daily living, including bathing, feeding, and mobility support.
  • Vital Sign Monitoring: Take and record vital signs accurately. Report any abnormalities or changes in patient condition promptly to the nursing team
  • Assessment and Documentation: Assist in conducting patient assessments and maintaining accurate medical records. Document patient information, interventions, and outcomes in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Patient Education: participate in patient education activities, including providing information on treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions. Ensure patients and their families understand their care plans and have the necessary resources for post-discharge recovery.
  • Collaborative Care: Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team members to coordinate patient care activities. Communicate effectively with nurses, physicians, therapists, and other staff members to ensure continuity of care.
  • Clinical Support: Assist with various clinical procedures and treatments as directed by the nursing staff. Maintain a clean and organized patient care environment.
  • Professional Development: Actively participate in educational opportunities and training sessions provided by the hospital. Seek feedback from preceptors and supervisors to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
  • Adhere to infection control protocols and hospital policies and procedures to maintain a safe and sanitary environment for patients and staff
