HDR has an exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced water industry professional to serve as our Northern California Water Business Group Manager (BGM). In this pivotal role, you’ll lead one of HDR’s largest, most established, and high-performing water programs—driving its continued growth, innovation, and impact across the region. As part of a world-class organization, you’ll collaborate with exceptional technical and business leaders to expand our already strong market presence, deepen client partnerships, and guide the strategic evolution of a mature and highly respected practice. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
  • A minimum of 10 years experience
  • Demonstrated experience with leading diverse teams
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values
  • Actively engaged in professional or industry associations to enhance HDR technical expertise and brand
  • Ability to work cooperatively with regional and local office managers, other area business group directors, technical directors and marketing managers
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Nice To Haves

  • Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience
  • 15+ years of experience strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the face of HDR’s water practice in Northern California, strengthening our leadership position in one of our most significant and well-established markets.
  • Lead strategic growth initiatives as part of regional leadership, building on the success of one of HDR’s largest water programs while identifying new opportunities to expand our impact.
  • Guide the direction and performance of a mature, high-performing business group, developing and implementing strategies that sustain excellence while driving innovation and growth.
  • Partner with our Water Business Development Leader to expand into new markets, pursue major opportunities, and advance technical services, delivery methods, and quality standards aligned with HDR’s strategic goals.
  • Drive business performance by preparing annual revenue forecasts and budgets, monitoring results, and leading execution of the group’s strategic plan.
  • Foster strong collaboration across teams and offices, leveraging the depth of our Northern California program to maximize client satisfaction, growth, and profitability.
  • Build, mentor, and empower a large, high-performing team, supporting continued staff development within an established and growing organization.
  • Cultivate and maintain trusted client relationships, supporting major pursuits and occasionally serving as a strategic client manager.
  • Monitor key performance indicators and implement continuous improvements that enhance efficiency, delivery, and business outcomes.
  • Champion HDR’s standards and values, ensuring strong implementation of company policies, quality assurance, and risk management practices.
  • Contribute to HDR’s broader vision and strategy through participation in regional and company-wide planning initiatives.
  • Support project excellence by facilitating project management and quality reviews in collaboration with regional and national discipline leaders.
  • Represent HDR across the industry and community, reinforcing our reputation as a leader in water solutions.
  • Perform other leadership responsibilities as needed.
