About The Position

The Internship Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for students participating in New Mexico’s statewide Summer Internship Program. Internship Coordinators support up to 20 high school students placed in internships through approved Program Operator and employer host sites This is a part-time, seasonal role (20 hours per week). Internship Coordinators are employees of Education at Work and work closely with students, employers, families and the Director of Internship Coordinators to ensure a high-quality, compliant and supportive internship experience. This role offers valuable experience for new and experienced educators interested in Career and Technical Education (CTE), Work-Based Learning (WBL) and workforce development, as well as opportunities for continued growth with Education at Work for future summer program cycles. Internship Coordinators are the primary point of contact for student support and play a critical role in maintaining program quality, safety and compliance.

Requirements

  • Experience in working with high school students or coursework/study in a related field.
  • Reliable access to a computer and smartphone (or ability to obtain prior to start).
  • Strong communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Capacity to deliver a structured curriculum to students.
  • Current, valid driver’s license.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel within the geographic service area.
  • Ability to pass required background check and fingerprinting (if not currently employed by a school district).

Nice To Haves

  • Current teacher or educator.
  • Experience and/or interest in youth development, counseling, social work or workforce development or coursework/study in a related field.
  • Familiarity with local employers or community organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of up to 20 student interns (20:1 ratio) and serve as the primary point of contact for students, families, employers and Program Operators.
  • Conduct regular check-ins to support student attendance, professionalism, and overall workplace readiness.
  • Facilitate the program’s provided student curriculum (approximately 6 hours per week).
  • Provide guidance and problem-solving support, acting as the first point of contact during emergencies or workplace concerns.
  • Maintain communication and support positive relationships with assigned employer host sites.
  • Conduct virtual or in-person site visits as required.
  • Ensure alignment of employer expectations and student responsibilities, and appropriately address and escalate any concerns.
  • Confirm student placement with host employers and monitor student eligibility and program requirements.
  • Monitor student progress, workplace engagement, and completion of program requirements.
  • Oversee student timesheets by ensuring accurate and timely submission, reviewing time entries before the payroll cut-off, and working with students to correct discrepancies.
  • Ensure student hours comply with the 20 hours/week average and 160-hour maximum.
  • Escalate payroll concerns to Director of Internship Coordinator/E@W.
  • Attend the mandatory IC & Student Orientations, weekly virtual Internship Coordinator meetings, and attend and support weekly curriculum sessions.
