BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non- profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. The International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City (IRC-SLC) Health Programs promote physical and psychological well being by facilitating access to healthcare services and providing education and advocacy. SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: IRC-SLC Health Programs promote physical and psychosocial wellbeing by ensuring access to healthcare services and providing culturally appropriate, strength-based, educational programming. The Health Program intern will provide direct support by assisting in identifying clients’ needs and providing support, scheduling appointments, teaching Navigating the Healthcare system classes, facilitating mental health screenings, organizing groups, transporting clients to medical appointments, referring clients to community resources, and other special projects. COMMITMENT: 10 – 20 hours per week

Requirements

  • Background and/or current study in public health, health promotion, social work, psychology, or other related field,
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Motivated, flexible, fast learner, and able to work independently. Self-starter qualities are necessary in this role.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Fluency in additional languages preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and willingness to drive clients highly prioritized
  • Must pass a required background check.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in weekly health program meetings and weekly supervision
  • Assist clients in accessing health services and resources and gaining self-sufficiency.
  • Enter and track data in systems.
  • Provide public transit orientations to clients or transport clients to one health appointment weekly.
  • Strengthen relationships with partner organizations and identify improved avenues for treatment and clients’ success.
  • Identify areas of growth and development for IRC-SLC’s health program and assist in program development goals.
  • Other, as assigned and/or determined by Health Program Supervisor.
