Location Duke Hospital (Duke South Clinics) – Durham, North Carolina 2301 Erwin Road, Durham, NC 27707 Note: The position will float between Duke Hospital (80%) and Duke Regional Hospital (20%) Work Hours Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM No weekends No holidays No call Some overtime Summary EMG technicians looks at multiple types of Neuromuscular disorders and peripheral nerve disorders. This position will require routine and complex procedures to obtain data for use in the diagnosis of clinical disorders of the nervous system. EMG technicians will also be trained in Neuromuscular ultrasound and assist with Muscle biopsies. This role involves at least one of the following modalities of Neurodiagnostics: Electromyography (EMG), Evoked Potentials (EP), or Epilepsy Monitoring (CLTM). The technologist performs diagnostic tests to assess the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Neurodiagnostic Technology (or comparable), Biological Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • Level 1: Competency and/or registry in one modality of Neurodiagnostic Technology (Preferred).
  • Level 2: Competency in two modalities of Neurodiagnostic Technology required. Registry in one modality required.
  • Level 3: Competency in three modalities of Neurodiagnostic Technology required. Registry in one modality required (Two registries preferred).

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Science, Health Science, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Study Performance: Perform one of the following END studies: EMG or Evoked Potentials.
  • Patient Interaction: Explain testing procedures to the patient and family using age-appropriate guidelines. Accurately take and document pertinent history from the patient or chart.
  • Setup: Prepare the patient for the appropriate study, including handling the patient, paperwork, room, and equipment.
  • Execution: Run studies with appropriate documentation, observe the patient, troubleshoot equipment and physiological artifacts, and distinguish normal from abnormal results. Utilize appropriate resources to perform the study.
  • Patient Care: Recognize and take appropriate action to respond to evolving patient care needs.
  • Sanitization: Demonstrate proper cleaning procedures for the patient, room, and equipment after each study.
  • Professional Development: Utilize downtime for training, cleaning equipment, and reading educational materials.
  • Adaptability: Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge to different testing situations. This includes regular participation in the on-call schedule and working independently on 2nd, 3rd, and weekend shifts.
  • Maintenance: Perform needed maintenance on equipment, including communicating problems to co-workers, the appropriate vendor, or the supervisor.
  • Perform all duties listed in Level 1.
  • Study Performance: Perform two of the following END studies: EMG, Evoked Potentials, or Epilepsy Monitoring. Act as a float resource to the sleep lab.
  • Registry: Maintain registry in one of the following areas: EMG or Evoked Potentials.
  • Technical Skills: Possess computer skills necessary to correct duplicate file names, incorrect history numbers, starting patients under the wrong names, networking issues, lost files, appending patient studies, etc.
  • Protocol Development: Assist in developing Clinical Standards and protocols.
  • Perform all duties listed in Levels 1 and 2.
  • Study Performance: Perform three of the following END studies: EMG, Evoked Potentials, Epilepsy Monitoring, or Epilepsy OR. Act as a float resource to the sleep lab.
  • Registry: Maintain registry in one of the following areas: EMG, Evoked Potentials, or Epilepsy Monitoring.
  • Technical Expertise: Troubleshoot equipment and lab issues independently; considered an equipment "super user."
  • Administrative: Generate requisitions for patient studies and process daily charges.
  • Leadership: Perform a minimum number of designated hours per year as a Charge Tech.
