This position is responsible for providing Neurological Diagnostics procedures in all patient care areas including NCS/EMG. Assess diagnostics needs of patients and works under medical supervision operating sophisticated medical equipment. Recognizes clinically significant events and follows facility policy and procedures regarding critical test results; maintains the patient's safety through communication to other patient care support staff during the NCS procedures; applies basic and intermediate NCS waveform recognition, relevant medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, infection control, current HIPPA practices, contraindications for NCS procedures, equipment instrumental and preparation; performs patient assessments and education as it relates, potential allergies, movement restrictions, and cognitive function. Communicates appropriately and effectively with the patient to convey the purpose of the NCS and answers questions regarding the test as well as with higher level personnel; understands why and how to maintain electrode connections; assists and/or performs the set-up of NCS procedures; identifies and performs basic and intermediate technical troubleshooting and artifact identification and elimination; understands and follows concepts of digital equipment and electrical safety within EMG/NCS unit; has knowledge of alternate NCS set-ups, protocols, and alternate equipment settings and their effects. Performs standard and complex electroencephalographic recordings: a) applies suitable electrodes on predetermined measured positions and checks their performance, b) calibrates and adjusts the EEG apparatus, c) selects predetermined electrode combinations as well as special combinations made necessary by the case under study; takes standard recordings; recognizes artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them; describes normal and abnormal clinical manifestations observed during the tests; uses activating procedures such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation and sleep; obtains the patient's cooperation for the best performance of these procedures; monitors on the same apparatus other variables such as electromyogram, electrocardiograms, electro-oculograms, respiration, etc., when indicated. d) abstracts relevant information from the patient's clinical record and additional information by questioning. Performs difficult and/or unusual recording procedures. Identifies appropriate age specific interventions and incorporates into daily practice Keeps equipment in a clean operating condition. Troubleshoots and repairs minor malfunctions in the equipment. Initiates repair of malfunctioning equipment. Transports patients, maintaining safety and comfort Practices strict ethical enforcement of protected medical and employee confidentiality. Uses confidential information only as needed to perform legitimate duties.
