We are seeking a Network Engineer - Senior to join our team supporting the Department of Commerce in Bluemont, VA. The DOC’s Commerce Acquisition for Transformational Technology Services (CATTS) team provides support for the OS CIO IT Service Desk, Infrastructure Engineering, Operations & Maintenance, and Training Functions for over 2,250 end users. This team enables the OCIO Infrastructure and Platform Services division to provide support for platform engineering and asset management. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Science, Information Technology, Engineering or Mathematics
  • 8 years of experience

Responsibilities

  • Engineer, configure, and maintain Cisco UCS, routing, switching, firewalls, SD-WAN, and ISE across three separate networks (unclassified and classified enclaves).
  • Lead migration planning and implementation from Cisco to Juniper and Aruba platforms (routing, switching, and wireless).
  • Administer and maintain Windows Server environments , including Active Directory (AD) , Domain Controllers (DCs) , DNS, DHCP, and GPOs.
  • Manage and support VMware ESXi, vCenter, UCS Blades , and server lifecycle maintenance.
  • Configure and support VPN platforms (Cloudflare and equivalents) for secure interconnectivity.
  • Provide classified troubleshooting, system hardening, and compliance for secure enclaves.
  • Serve as sole lead for COOP site operations , independently acting as Branch Chief on behalf of the government.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain continuity planning policy , ensuring compliance with Department and federal directives.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute agency-wide continuity exercises (Eagle Horizon and others).
  • Draft and deliver EEGs (Evaluation and Exercise Guides) and AARs (After-Action Reports) for all continuity events.
  • Provide senior leadership engagement , including authoritative briefings and readiness assessments for Department executives.
  • Sustain, test, and modernize continuity frameworks to guarantee mission survivability.
  • Configure and sustain VIPER systems for secure fax and secure voice.
  • Operate and troubleshoot VTC (Cisco/Polycom) and A/V systems for secure and unclassified communications.
  • Maintain and support secure communications across classified and unclassified networks .
  • Act as focal point for all IT operations and coordination across bureaus — all technical issues, policy, procurement, and documentation route through this position.
  • Coordinate with mission partners and agencies including DISA, FEMA, DHS, and inter-bureau teams for secure communications, COOP/COG exercises, and joint technical operations.
  • Provide technical leadership and authoritative answers to senior leadership across the Department and interagency partners.
  • Manage all IT policy, procurement, and paperwork for COOP site technology.
  • Lead cloud integration and modernization efforts in coordination with DC headquarters.
  • Oversee technology lifecycle management , including upgrades, lifecycle replacement, and future modernization planning.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation : network diagrams, rack elevations, system inventories, and lifecycle planning artifacts.
  • Perform fiber optic splicing, copper CAT5/6 cabling, and physical infrastructure support .
  • Design, draw, and maintain Visio diagrams, architectural plans, and rack layouts .
