About The Position

Network Engineer Associate Full-time Location: Fort Wainwright, AK Veterans First Initiative, LLC (VFI) is a U.S. Government Contractor and IT Services Integrator that delivers Network, Unified Communications, Information Technology, and Cybersecurity Engineering and Infrastructure Solutions on a global scale. VFI is certified by the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB). VFI seeks an experienced professional Network Engineer Associate to support our NE&S contract at Fort Wainwright, AK. The Network Engineer Associate (NEA) supports the medical mission of the DoD and ensures that the technical requirements related to the infrastructure are addressed. The NEA identifies and supports Network Engineer entry level resolution of LAN/WAN network problems and issues, researches network-level problems using network management tools and is responsible for assisting in the planning, installation, configuration, management and troubleshooting of LAN/WAN communication equipment for networked facilities Note: All candidates must be able to obtain a Public Trust Location: Fort Wainwright Schedule: Monday – Friday, weekends as needed Travel: Minimal, less than 10%

Requirements

  • Compliance with Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 8570.01 “Information Assurance Training, Certification, and Workforce Management” is required.
  • Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II or equivalent certification, per DoD 8570.01-M, "Information Assurance Workforce Improvement Program" (most recent version) is required.
  • The NEA should have a solid foundational understanding of TCP/IP, HTTP, SHTTP, SMTP, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, EIGRP, OSPF, PPP, HDLC, V.35, RS-449 and knowledge of the 803.2, 802.3, 802.5, 802.10, 802.11, 802.3u and 802.3z communications, EIA/TIA cable standards and Internet standards.
  • The NEA must be able to address issues related to synchronous and asynchronous communications, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, microwave and satellite communications.
  • Possess entry to mid-level experience in routed and switched LAN environments that operate Microsoft Windows and Active Directory, UNIX and OpenVMS environments and employ various routers switches, and terminal servers as well as various local and long-haul circuits such as T1 - T3, satellite and WAN connectivity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline such as Computer Sciences and 4 years related experience; or successful completion of a certified technical/vocational school and 8 years related experience.
  • An Automated Data Processing (ADP) sensitivity level determination is required for this position

Nice To Haves

  • Desired experience with various OTDR, cable testers, network sniffers.
  • Desired entry to mid-level experience with DoD Health Care Information Systems is highly desired to include Windows networks, Cisco Systems, and other commercially available network devices (Ruckus/Brocade, Juniper, etc.).
  • Microsoft certifications are desirable; Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Security +CE are desired.
  • Ability to achieve base-level certification for network core equipment in use at supported MTF is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • The NEA assists and contributes in troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues associated with network and routing protocols at all levels of the OSI model through the use of diagnostics and network administration tools such as the DHA Network Monitoring System (Check_MK), the DHA Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Management Authentication Service (Cisco ISE), the DHA Network Logging Service (Splunk), the DHA Network Device Configuration Backup System (HPNA), and the DHA Remote Access Terminal Service (HAL).
  • An understanding of Management Information Blocks (MIB) and MRTG to measure, plan and execute methodologies to ensure high performance levels and minimum downtime.
  • Responsible for learning the increasing levels of LAN/WAN security in assisting DHA enterprise level operations centers in maintaining the LAN/WAN barrier systems responsible for preventing unauthorized access to MTF systems. To meet these requirements, the NEA must be familiar with configuring network firewalls, VPN devices and IDSs.
  • Technical support includes diagnostics and configuration connectivity of MHS site/service specific servers, such as DBSS, CHCS, AHLTA, MHS GENESIS, DMLSS, operating systems, office automation, and other systems as specified with subsequent task orders.
  • Possesses significant knowledge and experience using diagnostic utilities to identify and isolate problems encountered on different mediums and network protocols, gather latency statistics and find specific network bottlenecks, evaluate problems and implement fix actions through device reconfiguration or replacement depending on the circumstances.
  • Review and analyze network infrastructure surveys, WLAN heat maps, floor plans, cable drop placement and counts, data analysis, network design and implementation as part of an established network design engineering team in support of customer directed requirements.
