About The Position

The Native Stewardship Technicians are essential to the effective and efficient operation of the collaborative community forestry program within the 24:1 Initiative. Beyond Housing is currently looking for a Native Stewardship Technician to work closely with our Native Stewardship Lead, Forestry & Community Conservation Director and Program Manager, and twenty-two small communities in the north St. Louis area to improve the health of community forests and native areas, and increase the citizen knowledge, understanding, and participation in the management of Missouri’s urban and community forests and native landscaping.

  • Comfort with using tools and equipment that are used in landscaping projects after training; including: mowers, string strimmer, power equipment, chainsaws, and brush cutters.
  • Familiarity with the 24:1/Normandy Schools Collaborative.

Responsibilities

  • Perform natural area and landscape site preparations, including the removal of invasive plants using both hand and power tools, and pesticide applications.
  • Maintain and enhance the health of bioretention basins and other native landscapes.
  • Conduct routine care for young trees, including watering, mulching, weed control, and pruning.
  • Prepare and manage new native planting sites through mowing, herbicide application, seeding, and other maintenance.
  • Promote awareness and participation in forestry and community conservation programs through community outreach activities.
  • Participate in community events such as trash cleanups, tree planting, native planting, and similar activities.
  • Participate in training and regional events related to native landscaping, tree care, and other conservation activities, as well as workshops related to personal and professional development; including occasional weekend availability.
  • Display a growing aptitude for native plant landscaping, landscape maintenance techniques, safe pesticide use, and other topics associated with this work.
  • Other duties as required.
