About The Position

The National Manager of Equipment & Fleet is a senior strategic and operational leader responsible for the direction, performance, and lifecycle management of the company’s national fleet, heavy equipment, and specialty electrical construction assets. This role oversees all aspects of procurement, maintenance, logistics, utilization, safety, and financial performance of a large distributed asset portfolio across multiple states. This position has full authority over staffing models, operator requirements, productivity expectations, and process design for mechanics, drivers, operators, and yard personnel. This leader will build a modern, data-driven fleet organization built on efficiency, cost control, and high levels of field support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Construction Management, or related field.
  • 10–15+ years of fleet or equipment management experience, ideally within construction or electrical contracting.
  • Experience leading large, multi-state fleet operations with responsibility for capital assets, maintenance programs, and logistics.
  • Proven leadership managing teams.
  • Strong understanding of DOT, OSHA, EPA, and state-level regulatory requirements.
  • Expertise with fleet management systems, telematics platforms, GPS tracking, and asset lifecycle management tools.
  • Ability to analyze complex cost, utilization, and performance data to drive strategic decisions.
  • Familiarity with heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, electrical construction tooling, and shop operations.
  • Strong executive communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead geographically dispersed teams and drive consistent standards across multiple regions.
  • Skilled in change management, process improvement, and operational scaling.
  • Negotiation strength and vendor relationship building.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive national fleet and equipment strategy aligned with operational, financial, and growth objectives.
  • Establish standardized processes for procurement, maintenance, replacement cycles, and equipment deployment across all regions.
  • Lead modernization efforts including telematics, GPS tracking, asset-management platforms, and preventive maintenance automation.
  • Identify future equipment needs to support expansion, new service offerings, and emerging electrical technologies.
  • Direct and oversee all fleet operations for vehicles, trailers, heavy machinery, bucket trucks, lifts, and specialty electrical equipment.
  • Manage company-owned equipment yards, repair facilities, and dispatch/logistics operations.
  • Optimize equipment utilization to targeted lease, rental, and owned equipment goals and ensure high reliability for field crews.
  • Establish operator qualification standards and cross-training programs to ensure safe, efficient use of equipment.
  • Implement rapid deployment processes for equipment needed on fast-track or emergency projects.
  • Own fleet and equipment budgeting, forecasting, capital planning, and replacement strategy.
  • Conduct total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis to drive informed asset purchasing and retirement decisions.
  • Reduce operating costs through standardization, vendor negotiation, parts program optimization, and technician efficiency.
  • Monitor utilization metrics, downtime, maintenance spend, and rental costs to improve operational and financial performance.
  • Ensure compliance with all DOT, OSHA, EPA, and state/local regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with the Safety department to develop training, inspection processes, operator certification programs, and incident-prevention strategies.
  • Maintain accurate and compliant records for driver qualification, hours-of-service, vehicle inspections, and licensing.
  • Deploy telematics, dashcams and other safety technologies to reduce accidents, violations, idle time, and operational risk.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a national team of fleet managers, equipment supervisors, mechanics, drivers, administrators, and yard staff.
  • Design staffing structures that support growth, productivity, and excellent customer service and KPIs to internal project teams.
  • Establish performance metrics and accountability systems for all fleet personnel.
  • Recruit and onboard high-performing equipment and maintenance staff, utilizing non-union flexibility to match operational needs.
  • Manage relationships with OEMs, dealers, rental partners, fuel vendors, telematics providers, and service networks.
  • Negotiate national contracts for purchasing, leasing, rentals, warranties, maintenance programs, and financing.
  • Evaluate and audit vendor performance to ensure cost effectiveness, reliability, and alignment with company goals.
  • Secure advantageous pricing, parts programs, and volume-based agreements.
  • Partner closely with Regional VPs, Area Managers, Project Management, Field Operations, Safety, Finance, and Procurement to ensure equipment strategies meet field needs.
  • Support preconstruction and estimating teams on equipment sourcing strategies for bid proposals.
  • Provide operational leadership with data-driven insights on fleet performance and future needs.
  • Act as the primary subject-matter expert for all fleet and equipment matters across the organization.
