About The Position

Under the supervision of the Supervisor, Protection Services, the Museum Security Officer serves as a member of the team that is responsible for maintaining life safety, protecting the collection, and providing exemplary “security as a service” to all visitors and staff at the museum. The Museum Security Officer communicates and enforces the policies and practices established for the protection and safety of museum staff, guests, physical structure, surrounding property and museum assets.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; some college coursework is preferred. Experience in the security field is preferred.
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills to work across departments and divisions internally and with diverse stakeholders externally.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak publicly, including presenting or sharing information in a clear, effective, and engaging manner suited to the audience.
  • Ability to calmly and professionally deescalate challenging situations with visitors.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strong customer service.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to changes in priorities based on operational need.
  • Ability to share clear, effective, and professional information through talking or writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with attention to detail and produce accurate results.
  • Ability to maintain a stationary position and/or move for the majority of a shift.
  • Must have and maintain CPR/First Aid/AED certification or obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Maintain punctual, regular and predictable attendance.
  • Possess or be able to achieve basic understanding of security principles and best practices.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work during all shifts and assignments.
  • Must possess a demonstrated understanding of ethical business conduct and professional practices including maintenance and protection of confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to respond calmly and make decisions in urgent anc emergency situations.
  • Ability to work regular weekend, evening, and holiday hours.
  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Microsoft Office 365.
  • Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the security field is preferred.
  • Experience with security systems and technologies is strongly preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required; some college coursework is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol the museum collections, equipment, building and grounds to prevent and protect against theft, vandalism, hazard, or threat.
  • Take immediate action to mitigate hazards and threats within the limits of policy, procedure, guidelines, and work instructions.
  • Screen persons and parcels upon entry and exit into the museum to identify suspicious, prohibited, or otherwise restricted objects or materials from entering and exiting the museum.
  • Observes conduct of staff and public to detect and immediately address suspicious activity and non-conformance of rules and regulations.
  • Documents unusual or non-routine occurrences in writing and distributes reports via email.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
