About The Position

Jefferson County’s Medical Examiner’s Office is seeking a well-qualified Morgue Technologist to assist in performing autopsies and performing other related forensic procedures for death investigations in a medical examiner's morgue. Employees in this job class also perform a variety of documentation and record-keeping duties, including: collecting and labeling samples, collecting photographic evidence, and maintaining records in an electronic database. Morgue Technologists may also participate in skeletal scene recovery by documenting the scene, labeling and packaging bones/evidence, and processing and storing evidence. Work is performed according to established guidelines and procedures under the direct supervision of a Forensic Pathology Assistant and Coroner/Medical Examiner.

Requirements

  • Driver’s license.
  • College coursework (at least 3 courses) in biology, anatomy, mortuary sciences, or related biomedical science field.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in vertebrate biology requiring animal dissections (human anatomy preferred).
  • Experience working as an autopsy assistant performing eviscerations.
  • Experience working as an operating room technician, surgical assistant, or veterinarian technologist.

Responsibilities

  • Performs autopsies by taking, storing and maintaining photographs and radiographs of the prepped bodies, documenting the appearance of the body on the appropriate charts and diagrams, cutting the body open, removing organs from the body, collecting and labeling tissue samples and performing special dissections as needed.
  • Collects tissues and fluids (e.g., liver, urine, bile, etc.) to be used in various analyses (e.g., toxicology, histopathology, DNA, etc.).
  • Labels and reassembles bones from skeletal recovery scenes in order to photograph and document the appearance of the skeleton.
  • Prepares decedent bodies for post-mortem examinations by taking photographs, collecting and removing any potential evidence from the bodies, removing and documenting all clothing and personal effects from the bodies, and labeling and storing items that have been removed.
  • Advises and instructs medical residents, students, and Morgue Technologists in proper anatomical dissection, preparation of detailed diagrams, charts, and clinical photography, and prepares anatomical specimens for teaching.
  • Teaches medical residents and students how to properly perform various anatomical dissections related to autopsies.
  • Participates in post-examination preparation of decedent bodies by sewing the bodies up, and tagging the bodies with identifying information, and cleaning/decontaminating the morgue after autopsies are complete so that bodies may be released to funeral homes.
  • Coordinates skeletal recovery scene efforts by overseeing search efforts, creating an X-Y axis to document where evidence was found, photographing, packaging and labeling each piece of evidence, and reconstructing the skeleton.
