About The Position

This position is accountable for planning and directing the activities of the Mixtures Control Unit to ensure Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) mixtures, Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) mixtures, and related mixtures are specified, designed, and produced so they are acceptable for use in roadway and structure construction and maintenance on both state and local systems.

Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Five years’ experience in civil engineering.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Requires the ability to traverse stairs and ladders.
  • Requires district-wide travel with occasional overnight stays.
  • Requires overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Verify designs for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Portland Cement Concrete (PCC), and related mixtures.
  • Establish, and supervise the implementation of, the district standard of practice regarding quality control practices, field sampling, mixture testing, and the inspection and approval of mixture production facilities and mixture component materials.
  • Provide timely, practical, and economical solutions to mixtures problems encountered during the construction and maintenance of roadways and structures.
  • Review plans, specifications, and special provisions and make recommendations prior to letting.
  • Ensure substantial compliance with department policies and specifications regarding mixture production and mixture characteristics.
  • Monitor the performance of mixtures during their service life and adjust practices to improve service life based on observations.
  • Assign, train, motivate, and evaluate staff.
  • Perform duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Perform all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
