About The Position

This position is accountable for the interpretation of policies and procedures which govern the geometric design, capacity analysis, and access control limits of highways. Specifically, these items are directly related to the design of intersections, interchanges, rest areas, weigh stations and highway alignments. This position is also responsible for the development of highway route location and design studies during peak workloads.

Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Five years of experience in civil engineering.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Statewide travel with occasional overnight stays.
  • Possible overtime.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest. The Illinois Governmental Ethics Act (5 ILCS 420/4A et seq.) requires certain state officials and employees to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State that will be made available for examination and copying by the public. All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission. (See Executive Order 15-09) Fines and penalties apply to untimely filings.

Responsibilities

  • Develops geometric designs and determines if central office review of geometrics is required prior to apublic hearing or informational meeting.
  • Reviews and concurs with geometric designs on state highways which have been prepared byconsultants, counties, municipalities, and other district bureaus. Approves policy consistent designs after becoming qualified by the procedure provided in the Bureau of Design and Environment Manual.
  • Reviews and/or prepares safety projects prior to submission to safety committee for inclusion program.
  • Reviews and accepts geometric revisions prepared after construction contracts have been awarded.
  • Directs route location and design studies during peak workloads.
  • Approves policy consistent designs.
  • Trains, motivates, and evaluates staff.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a mannerconducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
