About UPSM Middle School University Prep Science and Math Middle School is located within Detroit’s Cultural District, U Prep Science & Math Middle School operates inside the Michigan Science Center. We offer an innovative STEM learning environment, smaller class sizes, and a state-of-the-art facility to prepare students for success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Position Overview We are seeking an inspiring, forward-thinking principal to lead our STEM-focused school. The ideal candidate will be a strong instructional leader, passionate about STEM education, with the ability to cultivate excellence, motivate both staff and students, and engage families and community partners.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Educational Administration, or a related field
  • Valid Michigan Principal or School Administrator certification
  • At least five years of successful teaching experience, preferably in STEM disciplines
  • At least three years of school-based leadership or administrative experience
  • Proven experience working with middle school students in grades six through eight
  • Visionary leadership with the ability to set and execute a clear, compelling vision for STEM excellence
  • Strong data literacy and the ability to use student achievement data to drive instructional decisions and improvement
  • Exceptional communication skills across written, verbal, and interpersonal contexts
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and ability to lead diverse school communities with equity and respect
  • Innovative mindset with openness to new ideas, technology, and continuous improvement
  • Collaborative leadership style that builds strong partnerships with staff, families, and community organizations

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading or supporting STEM-focused academic programs
  • Strong background in curriculum development, instructional design, and assessment
  • Knowledge of project-based, inquiry-driven, and experiential learning models

Responsibilities

  • Drive instructional excellence with a STEM-centered curriculum.
  • Implement strategic plans to boost student achievement.
  • Lead staff development focused on STEM teaching methods.
  • Oversee operations and build strong ties with the Michigan Science Center and the community.
  • Oversee all daily school operations to ensure a safe, well-organized, and academically focused learning environment.
  • Manage the school’s budget, facilities, and resources to support instructional priorities and long-term sustainability.
  • Ensure full compliance with all state, federal, and network policies and accountability requirements.
  • Partner closely with the Michigan Science Center to maximize the use of shared spaces and specialized facilities in support of teaching and learning.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing teachers and staff aligned to the school’s mission and STEM focus
  • Lead high-quality professional learning centered on strong instruction, STEM pedagogy, and continuous improvement
  • Build and sustain a collaborative, accountable school culture that drives adult growth and student achievement
  • Coach and support teachers in using small class sizes to deliver personalized, high-impact instruction
  • Lead career exploration and exposure programs that connect scholars to real-world STEM pathways
  • Oversee high-quality after-school and enrichment programs that extend and deepen learning
  • Implement schoolwide positive behavior systems and restorative practices that support a strong, inclusive culture
  • Ensure every scholar receives the academic and social-emotional supports needed to thrive
  • Cultivate and sustain strong partnerships with the Michigan Science Center and other community organizations
  • Engage families as active partners in supporting student learning and school success
  • Serve as a visible, professional ambassador for the school within Detroit’s Cultural District
  • Develop and expand strategic partnerships that enhance STEM instruction and student opportunities
