About The Position

A Middle Level English/Language Arts (ELA) Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing instruction that helps students in grades 5–8 develop strong reading, writing, speaking, and critical-thinking skills. The teacher creates a supportive and engaging classroom environment that encourages students to explore literature, understand language conventions, and express their ideas clearly.

Requirements

  • Exceptional knowledge of the needs of students.
  • Knowledge needed to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and to speak effectively with middle-aged students and/or employees in a school environment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of effective and innovative instructional and student evaluation techniques.
  • Strong skills in classroom management, collaboration, and differentiated instruction.
  • Strong communication skills with students, staff, administration, and the public.
  • Understanding a child’s behavior and dynamics.
  • Skilled in problem solving and patience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work and effectively attend to students.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Application of percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations is required.
  • South Carolina certification in middle level language arts/English
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation
  • Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results must be provided

Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach standards-aligned lessons in reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary.
  • Guide students in reading a variety of texts, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and informational sources.
  • Teach the writing process, including planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
  • Provide constructive feedback to support student growth in reading comprehension and writing skills.
  • Use assessments (formative and summative) to monitor progress and adjust instruction.
  • Integrate technology to support literacy and communication.
  • Create a positive, inclusive classroom culture where all students feel safe and motivated to learn.
  • Communicate regularly with families about student progress and classroom activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan curriculum, analyze data, and support schoolwide initiatives.
  • Participate in professional development and maintain knowledge of current ELA instructional practices.
  • Strong understanding of middle-level literacy standards.
  • Commitment to fostering a love of reading and writing.
