About The Position

The Middle School / High School Band Director is responsible for planning, developing, and directing a comprehensive instrumental music program for students in grades 6–12. The Band Director provides high-quality instrumental music instruction, fosters student musicianship and performance skills, and organizes performances that support school and community engagement. As a district with a rich history in both competitive marching and concert band excellence, this role is critical in the maintenance of a program focused on student involvement, musical excellence, leadership development, and community pride.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field (required).
  • Valid state teaching certification with endorsement in Music Education.
  • Demonstrated experience directing band ensembles.
  • Knowledge of instrumental pedagogy, conducting techniques, and music curriculum.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students of varying musical abilities.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience directing middle and/or high school band programs (preferred).
  • Experience with marching band (preferred).
  • Experience coordinating performances, festivals, or competitions (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver developmentally appropriate, standards-based instruction for beginning, intermediate, and advanced bands
  • Maintain a cohesive 6–12 program with clear progression of skills and expectations
  • Develop students’ skills in instrumental technique, music reading, music theory, and ensemble performance.
  • Direct and conduct multiple concert bands and other instrumental ensembles as assigned.
  • Plan, organize, and direct all marching band rehearsals focused on instructing students in marching technique, musical performance, and ensemble skills.
  • Effectively prepare students for concerts, school/community performances, festivals, and competitions.
  • Organize and supervise performances such as seasonal concerts, graduation ceremonies, parades, and community events.
  • Design or coordinate musical arrangements, drill design, and show themes.
  • Coordinate and supervise band camp, sectionals, before/after-school rehearsals, performances, and school-related travel ensuring a safe and structured environment aligned with building expectations.
  • Collaborate with music staff, color guard instructors, percussion staff, and volunteers.
  • Develop and implement a strategic recruitment plan (elementary outreach, demonstrations, instrument fittings)
  • Actively monitor and support student retention across grade levels
  • Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment that supports student growth and creativity.
  • Build a positive, inclusive program culture that encourages long-term participation
  • Collaborate with other music staff to create a cohesive K–12 music program.
  • Maintain music library, instruments, uniforms, and equipment.
  • Manage inventory, repairs, and purchasing of instruments and music within the department budget.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and administrators.
  • Build strong partnerships with families to support student success.
  • Work closely with the Band Boosters and other community organizations to secure additional funding and make decisions that support program success.
  • Maintain accurate student records and evaluate student progress.
  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development, and school events as required.
  • Coordinate additional opportunities including pep band, jazz band, or other extracurricular ensembles if part of the program.
